India Weather and Itinerary

We are going to Delhi the first week of September. What is the weather like at that time? We would like to experience another country as well. We are thinking possibly Bhutan, the Maldives or Dubai. What do you think? Other suggestions?

It will be pretty warm. We were there in Oct.of 2010 and it was in the 90's then Now its about 109 so I would think it would be at least in the mid 90's.

From what I have heard Bhutan is difficult in that you need govt. permission and have to have a guide which you must hire.

Personally I would go with Dubai as its a short fligjht from Delhi and its a fabulous place to see.

Take a look at one of the weather site. I like www.weatherbase.com and check high and low temps for each place you plan to visit.

Delhi will be quite hot in September, in the high 90s F and above, but will be toward the end of the monsoon, so you may have cloud cover which helps with temps. It will be quite humid. Don't try to fit too much in, bring a hat and drink lots of water. For your other question it would help to know:

--How long do you have for the trip in total?
--Where else are you goung in India? (Just going to Delhi is not enough IMO)
--are you committed to your internaitonal flights yet --- in other words do you have to fly into an out of an Indian city on your way back home? This may affect where you would want to go.
--what are your interests? The Maldives, Bhutan and Dubai offer completely different experiences and one or all may not fit your interests.

India is a huge country geographically and culturally, so it is quite easy to experience very different places by staying within India. If you want something like Bhutan, then you can go to Ladahk or Himachal Pradesh (Kasuli, Shimla) or West Bengal (Darjeeling) . If you want beaches, you can go to Goa and Kerala. There is nothing in India as boring as Dubai, so can't help you there.

Singapore and Bangkok are also quite easily reachable from most major cities in India and could make good add-ons if you only have 2-3 days for the "other country". You can see a lot in both in that short a period of time.

Bhutan is very beautiful, but you usually have to be there a week or more to make it worthwhile, as you want to make the route between Paro, Thimpu, etc. If you don't have that much time, it may not be worthwhile. There usually are festivals in September though, so that could be interesting.

The Maldives are fairly easily reached, you usually have to transit through Sri Lanka, which is a fabulous destination in itself (I am currently in Galle), but again for Sri Lanka you need to commit some time as roads generally are not good and getting places takes time. That being said, Galle and beach areas around it are now only about 2 hours by road from Colombo thanks to the new highway and may work.

The Maldives are really stunning, but only offer beaches, not sure if that is what you want. Also, if the hotel you pick requires a sea plane journey, you may end up having to overnight in Male on both ends of the trip; making a short trip even shorter. So check flight times, hotel locations, etc.

Dubai is one of the dullest places I have ever been. Ersatz Middle East. And it will be brutally hot in September. It would be so low on my list as to be invisible.

If you can provide more details as to the length of time you have, etc, you probably will get more directed reccos.

It will still be close to 100F in Dubai first of September, at least it was last year. It depends on what you want to see in Dubai, but at that time of year it limits your possibilities. As you will only want to go out in the morning and after 4 or 5 pm. Unless, you want to stay inside and see malls with aquariums or ski slopes then September is a perfect time of year. You can take an evening 1/2 day desert safari out of Dubai that offers dune bashing, camel riding and dinner. If you want to lay on the beach then there is JBR or one of the hotels on the Palm. Most hotels will still have summer rates until around September 15th.

Also, if you are considering Bhutan you will need to get a special visa for India. As a multi-entry visa only lets you enter once every two months, so if you fly in and out of Delhi to go to Bhutan you will need a special visa. That would be in addition to getting a visa to Bhutan which you will have to go through a local agency to get. Along with paying $250 US per day per person.
