India - Orissa State
Message: after several trips to the more touristy regions in India I would like to visit Orissa for its temples and also for the beaches of the Puri region. Can anyone give advice? Is it a problem to get around in the state for a 60 year old woman alone who is not exactly a backpacker but loving a hot shower in a nice hotel at the end of the day? Thank you.

Iam from the state and I love the non touristy feel of the place. It is one of the poorest states in India but people are generally nicer, laidback(often complacent)and more honest than people from the north(especially the taxi "wallas"). It is also safer than most other places. You can hire a taxi to take you to the Sun Temple at Konark whic id en route to Puri. We stayed at a 4 star accomodation in Puri called Mayfair and it was beautiful. Other places of interest apart from Bhubaneswar would be gopalpur at Sea(Oberoi Hotel) and Nandankanan (Where they breed white tigers and alligators).
Dress conservatively and be prepared to be not admitted to the Puri temple( I dont know the temple laws now but the Prime minister of the country, Indira Gandhi, was refused admission beacause she was married to a non hindu). The food is excellent nad generally non oily as opposed to nothern cuisine and you can do great shopping in wood figurines, silver filigiree, gems, paintings on silk and palm leaves, handlooms and silk.
Welcome to my state...
Write to me if you need more information

That post was in '02!
I was in Orissa in 2001 and found it easy to get around using a car and driver arranged through my hotel. Be aware that you are unlikely to want to swim - cows on the beach - that you can only enter the temple in Puri if you are a Hindu, and that the temples in Bubhneswar will push for "donations". The sun temple is fabulous but it is likely to be very hot. See http://wilhelmswords.com/asia2001/index.html
