I don't think anyone is correct to say any part of Thailand needs to be avoided, why? For what reason? Anyway Hua Hin is where the Royal family live so if you are concerned I think you can considor it pretty safe to say the very least! But all of the country is safe anyway.

I just returned from Hua Hin a few weeks ago. My view on it is that it's a good resort town. Nice beaches, great shopping, lots of restaurants and such. If you want nice hotels you can choose the beautiful Sofitel Central right in town (but quiet once you're in the resort) or the tranquil Hyatt Regency a few minutes from town but easily accessible with a tax costing about $2.30 USD each way. I didn't really find that much to do outside of the town. I found Koh Samui much more enjoyable of a resort town. I would recommend flying into Hua Hin rather than taking the 2 1/2 boring bus ride from Bangkok.

You can go to Koh Singto by boat, just 20 minutes from Hua Hin town, small island. Son Suan beach is about 20 minutes away. We loved th Sam Roi Yot national park, scenary is amazing. The floating market is a few hours on a day tour. Lots to do we found but forget asking your hotel! Try the night fishing and the jungle elephant rides. The tour agents in town have much more information than the hotels have. There were about 10-15 good days tours available. Koh Samui has better beaches but is expensive and there are too many people chasing you to buy or rent things all the time, it was a nuisance.

We have returned from a week at the Hyatt Regency Resort and it was simply superb. Hua Hin is a very tranquil place certainly, clean, fresh seas breezes so it is not too hot. The Hyatt has swimming pools set in lush gardens and it is right on the beach, elephant statues with fountains, dreamy and so romantic. You can take leisurely evening walks in Hua Hin, do take a ride on the rickshaws, such fun.

Bob, surprising to you as it may seem, the prime aim of a vacation in Thailand for most people is not getting drunk in a go go bar. Stick to the places that give you your sort of vacation and leave others to enjoy as they wish. It is so sad to see wonderous places destroyed.
