Hua Hin marriott
We have just come back from 2 weeks in thailand 5 nights in the landmark in bankok which was fab. and 9 nights in the marriott in hua hin which after much research and recommendations from James A
and RHKKMK!!!!. Thanks for duff advice
we First walked into our rooms to find them fairly small and basic
the bathroom was tiny only room for 1 person at a time, the shower
was awful you had to run around the bath to get the water.
The rooms were also quite dark. Not what i would have expected of a supposed 4* hotel. We did ask the management if they could move us to nicer rooms but the hotel is run by Europeans (lars Kerfin} he was very rude and arrogant and unhelpfull and said the hotel was completely full but if we wanted to move to a suite we could pay him $150 per night. we went away from reception feeling very disgruntled and unhappy and i have to say that i wonder why they put a european in charge of this hotel as i dont think he had any idea how to give good customer service, leave it to the thais they do so much better. 2 days after arriving our air conditioning blew up whilst we were in the room allowing billowing smoke to pour into our bedroom , my wife thought it was going to turn to fire and she and the children were terrified although the hotel did replace the motor the following day no apology was forthcoming from the manager.
The following day our friends who we had travelled with and us had no hot water for the whole day.
After that all went smoothly and the atmosphere in the hotel was very nice the pool area was great and the surrounding grounds pretty,
the beach was beautiful with white sandy beaches and the water was lovely and warm although there were a few jelly fish to look out for.
Apart from the rooms which were not upto scratch the hotel was ok but not one i would revisit.
I have to say that we booked this hotel because of recommendations from the forums as mentioned above but maybe they had shares in the hotel because i certainly did not think the hotel deserved the praise that it recieved from the above people.
The weather whilst we were there was lovely hardly any rain and only 5 mins. tuk tuk ride from hua hin central.
The hotel had a spa and massage service which was very expensive 1900 baht and we found many spa and massage places in hua hin very very cheap and good at around 300 to 500 baht for 1 hour around about £4 !!! the best one as far as we found was Thai Orchid.
This was our third time visiting thailand and we still love it the people are wonderfull and friendly and i am already looking forward to our next trip to the "land of Smiles"

Rhkkmk and james gave their views on the hotel as they both liked it.There is a further post just below this where someone has just returned from the hotel and loved it.I don't think they deserved that criticism.
You were obviously very unfortunate in your room. We have stayed at the Marriott as well and thought the room was not as good as the others we have stayed in Thailand. However, I was aware of this through research beforehand. The room however was ok. We too had a problem with the air conditioning- it was dripping our first night but was also fixed that night. Our bathroom and shower were fine.
I loved the pool area and the restaurants there. It was a relaxing holiday. I was not impressed with Hua Hin itself though. However, if we wanted a "chill out " time after a hectic few days in BKK I might return to HH. I would go to the Marriott again, or perhaps the Sofitel. I did not like the pool area at the Hilton, although I gather the rooms are good.
I was pleased to hear you had good weather as I had thought that it wasn't so good in August( we went in April). The statistics consistently show 4 hours of sunshine of day. Where do they get that from?!

I've not been impressed with Hua Hin town. I prefer to stay farther out of town. I've stayed in the lagoon rooms at the Anantara (lovely!) and in the Regency Club at the Hyatt. The Hyatt is a beautiful property, but the rooms at the Anantara are better. The Hyatt has the advantage of being walking distance from the Chiva Som, however, for those who love spas.

Fiona you are right maybe the crititism oh james and rk was a bit over the top but you have to be honest and say that they have both been a little blinkered with regard to the marriott.
i believe that the rooms in the hotel were not good enough to be classed as a 4 star hotel and the bathrooms even more dissapointing especially the shower with hardly any water pressure and it was not just our room it was our kids room as well as our friends room.
any way we still loved our holiday but w3ould not return to the marriott but would maybe go to the hyatt or the hilton

Then again, maybe it wasn't over the top at all. I think one needs to weigh carefully advice from those who continuously tout one place, no matter what the OP's particular circumstances are, and then gets nasty when someone "dares" to disagree with them! Sheez!
Thanks for the post, Jeremy-I'd ask that you post your review on tripadvisor.com to inform others of your experience, as I know of a few people who are considering Hua Hin as a vacation destination.

No I don;'t have shares in Marriott ! I am sorry you did not enjoy that but of course many do, I agree that the Manager did not seem to be taking care of things and should have done whatever possible, when I last went there was an American who although I believe was the Restaurant Manager seemed to take a personal interest in everything going on.
I and other do not 'tout' that hotel but having stayed at many many places in Hua Hin over weekends for countless years the price of around $70 is good value, in my opinion. I have also commented on the Hyatt, Anantara, Kaban Tamor, Chom View Suites, Golden Sands, Dusit etc etc Evason etc with their equaly plus and minus points.

Thanks for the replies and james thanks for your input my comments were not to be taken as insulting just that when people talk about a hotel as much as RHKK and in a more limited way as you do then i suppose i expected a lot more, so sorry if you thought i was being rude to you.
Fiona : Hua Hin well I suppose if I'm being honest i was a bit shocked at first when a lot of the surroundings are very run down and need a lot of investment not so much the main centre of hua hin which is quite modern with lovely restaurants and market stalls scattered all down the main strip (great bargains) but a lot of the other side roads. Its especially difficult if you have small children or babies because pushing a pushchair was hard because the pavements were a little uneven and are quite a bit higher than the roads and not all shops have easy access to the doors when using a pushchair.
There are 2 night markets one nearly opposite to the marriott which was called the grand bizzare which was really aimed at the locals although i would say it was better value for money with food, clothes, watches dvds (buy 5 get one free 650baht) the other one was in town it was a bit bigger but more touristy, we only went once as the first one seemed much better.
The atmosphere though is great as usual its what you would expect of thai culture smiles friendliness great, NO, brilliant value for money and the food is very good and cheap too with the four of us 2 adults and 2 children eating very nicely for around £15 for a three course meal including loads of soft drinks.
The beach especially around the marriott was incredibly beautiful white soft sand (apart from when there was a storm) the only problem is that there are loads of horses on the beach which i dont think is very pleasent when all i wanted was to get into the sea which is beautiful. and then make our way back to the sunbeds, you had to be careful that you did not step into something unfortunate.
manure is great for the garden but not great on the beach!!!
So the conclusion of hua hin i would go back but maybe i would like to try somewhere else first and i seem to think that i prefered Phuket although i have not been there for a long time and i know that the weather is better in hua hin at this time (August) so i will leave it up to you to make your minds up if you go you will have a great time with good weather lovely people and at the end great memories.
P.S. The elephant trek place which is only a short tuk tuk ride from Marriott was a very good experience. We trekked through "jungle" although more barren wasteland for an hour and the elephants also went through a lake. Not for the faint hearted but certainly worth a try. However maybe I would suggest not going mid afternoon when we did as it was very hot then and from what I understand you can go later in the day when the heat of the day may have subsided a litle.

If you are looking for somewhere else in August you should try Koh Samui.Great weather but do some research first. I personally am not a fan of the main tourist town, Chaweng, but have been twice to Bophut. I am loathe to recommend the hotel we loved as Rhkkmk and james A also love it!!

Actually, I think James A is much less of a "tout" than Bob. Seems to me he gives advice based on what the person says they are interested in - price range, night life, no night life, etc. and usually suggests options.
Anyway, after reading your post and Kevey's (were you travelling together?) hope that the Marriott Riverside in BKK does not suffer from the same problems. I know Bob's opinion and the website looks great. We liked what looked like an "open" low-rise Thai feel with teak floors and we definately want to be on the river. Has anyone else stayed there recently who can share their experience? Thanks!

the rooms there are a lot better than the HH Marriott.Inside is beautiful. Reception is first class. We emailed the hotel with several enquiries before we went and were given prompt replies. Breakfast was excellent. We also went for the Club benefits which I would def. do again. The pool area is lovely- we just didn't have time to use it!We had dinner there only once as we had too many other restaurants to try. However, it was first class. But you can get "first class" in countless other local restaurants at a fraction of the price. This is obviously not unique to the Marriott. My one thing against it was the distance away from everything. I quite liked the boat during the day but not at night all the time.
