How to meet up in Narita?
am flying from Shanghai to Narita and my partner is flying in from Chicago. We want to meet at the airport and then take the express train to our hotel at Ikekeburo Station.
However, when I had a connection to Narita before on a trip from Chicago to Beijing, I noticed that I had to take a bus between terminals and that they checked my ticket stub before letting me on that bus. I worry that I will fly into one terminal, he will fly into the other, and we won't be able to figure out how to meet up to take the train together.
I am arriving a few hours earlier, and I would like to just pick up my bags, go over to meet him at his gate, and then go through Customs together at his terminal, where we could pick up the express train. Will we be able to do that? How?
Please, help!

I asked because I know that there is a rail shuttle between the two. I did have to take a bus from plane to terminal once.
In December, I arrived terminal 1 and went through a security check before being able to get on the train to terminal 2.
One place that I could recommend meeting is at the Yahoo! Cafe. It is more convenient to use for departures as it is just plane-side after passport control. But, you could spend your extra time there on their free internet computers composing sending us your trip report.

Don't know about meeting up--I am always just changing internationa flights there, but this will keep your post at the top.
I can also verify that as of December I had to ride a bus between Terminals 1 and 2--the bus for my specific arriving airline. There is the rail connection between Terminal 2 and its satellite.

mrwunrfl, I will be arriving in Terminal 2 (China Air, I believe), and my partner will be arriving at Terminal 1 (AA).
I can break up my question into a few smaller questions, and if anyone can answer any part of this, I would be so appreciative.
(1) Can you pick up your luggage in T2 without leaving through security?
(2) Can you go back to where the buses between terminals are after picking up your luggage?
(3) Can you take the bus between terminals if you cannot show a ticket for a connecting flight that requires the transfer?
(4) Can you walk from the between-terminal bus connection arrival area to airline gates without going through security?
(5) Can you walk from the between-terminal bus connection area to the airline gates without showing a ticket for a connecting flight that requires you to be there?
(6) Do you think any of this would be facilitated if I ask a Japanese friend to write me a note explaining what I am trying to do?
(7) Should we reserve our green car express train ticket online beforehand?
(8) Is it worthwhile to reserve a full 4-person green car?
(9) Does the express train really arrive at the same Ikekeburo station that connects to downtown etc. trains?
(10) How inappropriate are public displays of affection at Narita airport? I haven't seen my partner in two weeks, and I miss him dreadfully.
Thanks!

Hi elvedon. I will try to show you how to meet your partner at Narita.
1)You arrive T2, pass the passport control, pick up your luggage, then go through the customs.
2)Outside of the customs area (arrival lobby of T2), you will find Terminal shuttle Bus-stop (to T1).
3)Get on the bus to T1(yellow bus). You will not need connecting flight ticket or bus ticket. It's free.
4)After arriving T1, go to the arrival lobby of T1. Your partner will come here after arriving some T1 spot, and finishing all the disembarkation procedures.
5)Go to the JR train station, and buy your Narita Express(N'ex) tickets to Ikebukuro.
In case of the flight delay, it will be better to buy your tickets at the airport.
Be careful, not all the N'ex will go to Ikebukuro. It's rather few.
Alternatively,I recommend to take the limousine bus to Ikebukuro. The bus departs every 30-60 min. and will take you directly to the doorway of hotels such as Crown Plaza Metropolitan, SunShineCity Prince Hotel.
Reservation is not required. First-come and first-served basis.
You can get airport maps here.

Good luck!

Thank you so much, yathy!
Do you know if there is a good "landmark" (cafe, statue, etc.) in T1 where I can meet my partner? It's such a huge airport that I would feel best arranging an exact spot to meet up.
Thank you again for your help!

Hi elvedon,
I think "Information counter" will be a good landmark for you.
It is located centre of arrival lobby of T1, 1st floor. There is no other infomation counters at this floor, so it will be good place to wait for your partner.
You can see the location on the map.

Also, it will be an ideal location for taking a train or hop on a bus to downtown Tokyo.
You may find stairs to JR train station and limousine bus ticket counter near the landmark.
I am very happy if these information help you, and I hope both of you have a good trip and enjoy staying in Tokyo!
