How to get from Hong Kong to Gaozhou?

Jump to last reply

Our family is visiting Gaozhou, where our eldest daughter was born. It is a small city somewhat near Maoming. The nearest airport is Zhanjiang. We are flying from the U.S. to Hong Kong, spending one or two nights in Hong Kong. After that we need to get to Gaozhou for a one-day visit, and then fly up to Beijing for several days. We figure that we need 2 nights in either Guangzhou or Zhanjiang in order to cover the Gaozhou visit.

We could train to Guangzhou (1 hour?), then fly to Zhanjiang (1 hour flight time), drive to Gaozhou (1.5 to 2 hours?). Or, we are told it is a 4-5 hour drive from Guangzhou to Gaozhou. Our adoption agency guide seems to be recommending this but it is a little hard to communicate with him via email. We are not doing a group tour so we can arrange what works for our family -- 2 adults, kids ages 5 and 9.

Add to the mix that we are dealing with some (manageable) allergy/medical issues so need to have a modern hotel that is fairly high-end where we can arrange to handle these. We want this to be a positive experience for our daughter so want it to be comfortable and not too hectic since it is going to be a very emotional visit.

Any suggestions are welcomed.
