Hotel/Resort Differences
Message: Hi Everyone,
My fiance and I were going to Bali 9/27-10/11 and I had some questions about these hotels and the differences between them, beaches, food, accomadations. Any help would be great.
Grand Hyatt
Le Meridian Nirwana
Ritz
Sheraton Laguna
Conrad
I've seen other places mentioned in the postings, but the price is too much. The only reason the Ritz is on my list is because I found a good deal. Also, any suggestions for restuarants, shopping, and massage would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Hi Newlywed
I have been busy on this forum planning my 2nd honeymoon to Bali. Do a search in the box at the top of this page for the names of the hotels you are considering (ie. Bali + Conrad). There have been a ton of comments on these in the past.
Also, one thing you will surely read, and I know all the Bali experts on this forum will say, is that these 5* beach resorts are not the "real" Bali. Make sure to spend some time in Ubud, too. There are some very nice places to stay and it will give you a better sense of the Balienese arts and culture.
Have fun.

i can speak to the bali hyatt and the conrad...i stayed in both in june...
first we stayed in the new conrad--opened in may, 2004...it is simply splendid...it is minimilistic in look...the rooms are simple but lovely, light and airy....the beds are comfortable...the lobby is large and open on two sides...also very minimilistic....they were just getting the staff up to snuff when we were there so things were a bit rough...the gourmet restaurant was not open as yet, but is by now...
the exterior on the ocean side looks like a movie set....you have never seen so many pools, many interconnected in you life...lovely grass areas, lots of different levels---too hard to explain...two actual sand beach areas at two ends to the free style pools...lots of gardens and grass...a wide, man-made looking, beach....the water was not nice when we were there however and we never even went down to it...
there is a large deck off of the lobby which overlooks the main pool area...
there are restaurants and bars throughout the back grounds...the italian restaurant just beside the beach is very good...
some room open directly into the pool area---actual steps from your terrace down into the pool---villa rooms...the lighting at nite is lovely....there are many large vases which are lit as well as trees, etc...it is very enchanting....at sunset it was magnificent....
across the ocean area you can see a large mountain...
the conrad is located just north of the nusa dua area, about 20-30 minutes ride from the airport (60,000 rp taxi ride---$6)...it is really off by itself, although there is a small town area just to the north as well as some shops and restaurants---bumboo bali being an excellent restaurant just to the north...
i suggest that you request a room that opens directly onto the back garden area...the standard rooms are nice but not fabulous...
the grand hyatt...i wanted to visit there but never got there...the comment that i remember about it most is that it is so large that people often get lost...
having said that i did stay at the bali hyatt in sanur....i chose it largely because it is in the middle of the town of sanur...the town is perfect...good restaurants, shopping and other conveniences....it does not have all the hub-bub of kuta or ubud....i will take knocks for calling ubud a hub-bub place but that was my ovservation---not as bad as kuta however...
the bali hyatt....it is a large place too but about 1/2 the size of the grand hyatt...it is much older...it is in pretty good shape...the grounds are very lush and mature...the room we had--ocean view, was a standard sized room with a lovely balcony, which we did not use except for bathing suit drying...i think some people would sit out there however and read or relax or have drinks...its just so hot for me that i prefer the a/c...i found the room rather dark...its the interior...it was older but comfortable...it had a walk in closet which was nice...the bath was old...i did not like the walk back to the lobby each time...it was quite a distance...we were in pod 2---there are 3 pods of rooms...the buildings look like prefabs to me...all sterile cement...
we had some service problems in the dining room at breakfast...i did not particularily like the staff...the conrad staff had been so young, energenic and fabulous that it probably was an unfair comparison...
kathie loves the regency rooms here and the deperate club room which is quite lovely---you take your breakfast there so that would be nice another time...
i strongly suggest that you hire a driver for part of your time in bali...we had putu of fame from this forum...his contact is: [email protected]
