Hotel with a view!

Hi
Organising next trip to Oz in December to meet new grandson. We are stopping over in Singapore for 3 nights out and 2 back.
On way out I would like a 4/5 star hotel but I want a room with a view of water! We are not keen shoppers but love exploring new places and finding out about the history of a place.

Thinking of Mandarin Oriental, Royal Plaza on Scotts, Meritus/Marina Mandarin or any others you suggest!

Any ideas would be gratefully received; I have had such a lot of help from posters on this site in the past!

Many thanks
Masha

I stayed at the Meritus Marina Mandarin last year and can tell you, we did not have a view of the water. The hotel was nice enough but I would not stay there again. All the rooms open to an atrium and they have music in the lobby that goes well past midnight (at least they did then) and unless you are a very sound sleeper, it will keep you awake.

While I'm no Singapore expert, it I were to go back, I'd stay at the Ritz-Carlton Millenia http://www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Proper...re/Default.htm

Royal Plaza on Scotts has no view, and isn't close to the water, but is well located just off of Orchard Road pretty near to Orchard MRT. I was just redone last winter, and is completely non-smoking.

Along the Esplanade/waterfront area, there is the Mandarin Oriental, Swissothel the Stamford, Ritz Carlton, Raffles the Plaza, Marina Mandarin, Fullerton. While these hotels offer water views, they do not have views from all rooms, so be very careful about the actual room you are booking.

All of the hotels have rooms that do not face the water, so be careful what room you book. I'm not crazy about the area these hotels are in...it's very modern and sparkling and a bit sterile for my taste, but the water views are nice, that's for sure, and some of the hotels are very nice.

The Fullerton might be a good pick, but not the rooms there. If you stay there, the Loft Suites are special with great views, and that is what you should get. If you book through a Virtuoso agent, you can book a Palladian Suite and upgrade at time of booking to Loft...and there are a few other benefits as well like breakfast included. If you don't know a Virtuoso agent, you can be referred to one via www.virtuoso.com. Or you can see prices and benefits at www.whatahotel.com. Most Virtuoso agents charge nothing for bookings, so if the one you find does, just find another if you aren't happy with the charge for booking. www.whatahotel.com does charge, but it's also the only site I can find that you see the Virtuoso benefits and pricing instantly without having to actually talk or e-mail to someone in particular...so it's a good reference. There are also often Virtuoso package deals that are not on whatahotel.com, so it would be good to contact a live agent should you want to book.

The area around Clarke Quay is nice, with lots of restaurants and night life, and nice river views. During the day it's quiet, and at night there is a lot of life. It's brightly colored and happy feeling. Swissotel Merchant Court faces the river, and some rooms have nice balconies overlooking it, but not all. Entry level rooms here are small and in need of some attention, but suites may be OK...It is definitely not 5 star.

Another choice in Clarke Quay is the Novotel...don't know much about it, except that it's not 5 star either.

We very much enjoyed the Four Seasons during our 6 days in Singapore in August. It has no water views, but some rooms do face a garden area, which is nice. The rooms are huge, staff is friendly and service is faultless in our experience. Breakfast is the best we've experienced anywhere...amazing variety and top quality. Location is just off of Orchard Road on Orchard Boulevard...close to MRT, lots of shops and restaurants, taxi always available should you need one. Although we are not shoppers, we loved Orchard Road for the business of it, and the constant buzz and kind of happy vibe we felt there that we just didn't feel in the Esplanade area.

The Shangri-La is about 10 minutes walk up from the Orchard MRT and has a beautful pool and gardent area. Again, no water views, but it is the most tropical resort feeling hotel in Singapore. 3 areas of rooms, Garden, Tower and Valley Wings. Tower wing rooms are most recently redone I think, but are a bit corporate in feeling. You can get Horizon Club rooms there, which give you lounge benefits if you like. Garden Wing rooms are a tad on the old side, but have balconies overlooking the pool in most cases (check). Valley Wing is a luxury wing all to itself, with gorgeous rooms, service like Four Seasons, all day canapes and champagne...a lovely experience.

Spoiled for choice in Singapore.

It's definitely the Ritz Carlton with a room with a marina view. Happy Travels!

Yep, Ritz is the way to go! Here's the view (one from the room and one from the bathroom).

There is also the Shangri La Rasa Sentosa on Sentosa Island--it's a little out of the way, say if you are making frequent trips to Orchard Road, but the hotel does have water views.
