Hotel for last night BKK
Need recommendation for last night BKK. WE will have stayed at riverside hotel,as Kathie recommends , and returning from 2 days at River Kwai ( as LL recommends) . Also will have stayed 3 days in Chiang Mai and gone to ENP Will be catching 9:30 morning flight home next day (SVM) On a Monday) Would like downtown experience closer to street life. I know, starting another thread LL!) Thanks for your help! Idea of last night at airport seems too sterile!

Last time in town we stayed at http://www.aloftbangkoksukhumvit11.com nice hotel in a good location and a bit different from the norm. This time we picked a relatively new place near Suk Soi 21. Looks nice, gets good reviews and is great value http://thee20.com

Before any of you laugh at me, consider these qualities about the Bangkok Christian Guest House: the cost of a single room per night is 1100 Baht, including full breakfast (probably more for double); the location is a small oasis downtown just off Silom Road two blocks from a sky train station; just down the street from the guest house is a large indoor shopping mall with hundreds of shops and at least fifty food establishments, including Swensen's Ice Cream Store (you may discount the value of Swensen's right now, but, after a period of unfamiliar food, you may head right there); once the sun sets, the streets in all directions are lined with food stalls and you have your pick of freshly grilled seafood, typical Thai noodle dishes, and many other offerings, all available with beer---this is where you see the real Bangkok residents; the staff at the guest house is helpful with travel plans, arranging taxis, and such.
The downside is that the rooms are as stark as a 1950s college dorm room, even though the facility was renovated a few years ago. The beds are comfortable, there is a good TV with English language cable stations, the bathroom is adequate, there is plenty of hot water in the shower, every thing is clean, but, oh!, why couldn't they have put a little pizzazz into decorating the rooms? Well, it's only for sleeping.
Naturally, smoking is forbidden and, of course, there is no bar, but nearby are several large international hotels that offer these as well as other diversions.
While I've stayed at some of Bangkok's fancy hotels, I keep going back to the guest house because of its location and its value. Where can you beat it? ZZ

How are getting back to Bangkok from Kanchanaburi, and what time you plan on arriving at your Bangkok hotel?
The 3rd Class train is great, and a proper Thai experience. But there are only 2 a day, and the chances are they'll be a bit behind schedule. Scroll down on this [excellent] link for the times, and lots more information on the Kanchanaburi area...

There are plenty of buses. But they are boring, and the scenery for much of the trip is industrial, and the traffic will probably be heavy the closer you get to Bangok. If your bus terminates at the Bangkok Southern Bus Station, it's still up to an hour from the Siam/Silom/Sukhumvit area.
As for where to stay. If you don't plan on arriving until late afternoon/dusk, and need to vacate your accommodation at around 0600 to give you plenty of time to reach the airport, then there's not a lot of point paying too much when all you want is somewhere convenient to go out for a meal, a couple of drinks, and then 'crash' for a few hours. No need to have breakfast included either, if you won't be there to eat it.
Zambezi's recommendation sounds interesting. Personally, I'd stay close to the river in the Banglamphu area. Loads of accommodation options, excellent places very closeby for a nice meal and a drink or two. And there's a great street vibe.
