Hotel choices in Manila

Paging BillT
I am copying it here as it may be a better title and seen by others than just BillT:
I read your report from 2005 and found it helpful.
We will be transiting through Manila (2 days/3 nights)in March. Our situation will be different as we don't have family to help us, etc.
For a short tourist visit, would you recommend hotels in Manila (Hyatt, Pan Pacific, Diamond) or in Makati (Shangri La, etc) in terms of convenience to tourist sightseeing. We are not there to shop, so that is not a strong consideration. We would like to stay in a good hotel in a nice & safe area, but mostly, close to tourist sites so we don't spend as much time in traffic.
Your (and others') help is appreciated.
