Horrific Pollution in Delhi
From today's NYT. I was aware that pollution levels were bad, but didn't realize just how awful. The author discusses whether it's ethical to raise children there.

According to the WHO study referenced in the NYT piece, Delhi is #1 and Mexico City is #13.

I was in Meerut, northeast of Delhi--if possible, even worse visible pollution. The entire roadway between Del and there is full of construction dust, debris, and horrible air. it made me understand the lure of the many multistory malls--not just for shopping, but also for air conditioning!
I asked friends in Meerut how they could stand it--the constant gray particulate haze 24 hours a day. They just smiled and shrugged, "You get used to it!"

My wife is Indian and we have been there 7 times. On the 6th visit I began to cough practically as soon as we exited IGI and did not stop until we left.
On the 4th or 5th visit my son began to cough uncontrollably in her home town of Ajmer. His inhaler did not help. Fortunately you can buy prednisone OTC there or at least back then you could. I put him on a short course of tapering doses and he was fine w/i a few hrs.
On out last and final visit my wife got sick there. We went to Bangkok afterwards where the illness really manifested and she was in the hospital for five days. She recovered fully from some terrible GI bug and we are so glad that we got to BKK as the hospital, Samitivej, was excellent and accepted the travelers insurance we had purchased.
I read in this article that they demanded 1k USD before they would treat a boy in resp. distress. All I can say is I am so glad we did not have to hospitalize her in India. Our relatives tell us stories about how they bleed you dry just to treat you. We will never go there again and its not just because of the pollution. If you get seriously ill there you better have a travelers policy with substantial coverage for emergency evacuation. Never ever again!

I'm adding what an utter shame this is. We met so many nice people and had some great service, esp. at the Marriott in Chandigargh and even the City Park in Delhi where we have stayed twice as it's the closest and nicest place in proximity to where our relatives live. I could go on and on but nothing is worth a serious risk to ones health.
