Hongkong Overnight

I will be overnighting (ie. just for one night) in Hong Kong on my way to another country on a adifferent airline (in fact, I will have to do this twice). Any inexpensive, low hassle, easy-to-get-to, accommodation suggestions?

Hi -

I would recommend the YMCA. I know that sounds strange but their hotel is actually pretty nice considering the name it has. It is not rundown or anything. We saw all types of people staying there. We have also stayed at the Hyatt Regency and Grand Tower.

The YMCA is a great location and very easy to get to. We had a view of the harbor (incredible at night) for an extra charge. I can't remember exactly but I do know it was under $100. If that is too much, ask for one that does not have a view. You also have fairly quick access to the subway a couple of blocks away.

Make sure you go watch the sunset from Victoria Peak. It's amazing.
<BR

Inexpensive comes down to Chunking Mansions on Nathan Road in Kowloon.
Thats all I can think of. No hassle(?) I'm not sure not having stayed there...but it is inexpensive.

Easy to get to. From Chek Lap Kok on Lantau Island where the airport is...you can get to HK or Kowloon by bus, taxi, or MTR Train. The easiest is the Express Train which leaves from right inside the airport. Gets to Kowloon Station in about 25 minutes and then to Hong Kong a few minutes later.
Cost about 100HK or $14 US. Fast, safe, dependable, and frequent. Plus comes with a free transfer to a bus that goes to major hotels. If you chose this route, you could take the MTR Express Train to Kowloon Station, then Take the free shuttle bus to the Hyatt Regency...then walk about one or two blocks to the Chunking Mansions on Nathan Road..

There are other hotels that may be inexpensive...but they are further away from the main transportation. Meaning you will not get to them as easily.

Hong Kong Hotels are not known to be inexpensive.

Michael

Meed -

Not knowing where you are from, I would recommend not staying at Chungking Mansions. We have not stayed there but went by while walking around. To quote my husband "I'd rather stay at the airport". If you are from the U.S., you would probably not like it.

Since you will only be there one night, I would really urge you to spend a little extra if you can. But, I don't know your budget.

You might try planetholiday.com

they have lots of deals on hotels in Asia. We have used them twice. Once for Hong Kong and once for Bangkok.
<BR
My dau & I stayed at YMCA. Not what you thing of if you're from USA. Very nice. Roomy, great view and under $100/ night. We took the airport van, because we were getting in real late and were unfamiliar w/HK. The subway is only acouple blocks and could've taken it easier and cheaper than shuttle. Shopping, boat docks are all right there. We were strongly cautioned against going into CMansions. , and they looked pretty scary when we went by. Have fun.

Hi,

Chungking Mansions is definitely not for the average person, even on a budget. You will constantly worry about leaving valuables in your room.

Try the Ramada Inn Kowloon at Chatham Road. They are a budget hotel for business travellers. Rooms are small but quite clean, and there is a nice buffet breakfast included. You need to negotiate to get a better price - I can get a lower price regardless because I have stayed there before. I doubt if you will for just one night though. Their prices are lower than most hotels in Tsimshatsui (tourist district of Kowloon).

Try Travelocity.com to check out hotel rates, or try the following link (it may not work from this posting):

<u><a href="http://dps1.travelocity.com:80/hotsdetail.ctl?ln_num=001&prop_cd=001893&hot_name= RAMADA%20KOWLOON&ht_st_add=73%2075%20CHATHAM%20RD% 20S&ht_cty_add=KOWLOON%20HK%2000000&hot_location=K OWLOON%20HONG%20KONG&ht_logo=ht_nrlogo.gif&ht_imag e_list=NR-001893-1-W216-H216.gif%20NR-001893-M-W175-H175.JPG%20NR-001893-S-W060-H060.GIF&ht_photo=Y&ht_medium_image=NR%2fNR-001893-M-W175-H175.JPG&zagat_rating=&amn_list=Y%20N%20N%20N%20N% 20Y%20N%20N%20N%20Y&prev_page=hotslist&geo_cd=&amn _phone=852-2311-1100&amn_fax=852-2311-6000&SEQ=946918970107276&last_pgd_page=hotslist.pg d">Ramada listing at Travelocity</a><
