HongKong-Lunch at Jumbo Rest.
Has anyone done the lunch hour here ? What would a taxi from the port area be, and are there any menus online ? How much was your lunch ? Want to have enough money.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Well, it's been 12 years since we went there, but when we did, it was quite bad food and quite a high price. Aberdeen itself was a fun place to walk around, the Jumbo was just a bus tour stop restaurant. Very, very disappointing, the worst food we had in Hong Kong.

There are different owners (as of about two years ago) or at least different management so I don't think you can go by a 12 year old review! There is more than one restaurant there now so check it out with someone who's been there more recently. We did eat there a few years ago, and it wasn't awful, just typical Dim Sum, in other words not great but still fun!

The 12-year old reviews are pretty accurate still, IMO. What I would do is to eat at Top Deck of the Jumbo which is the Mediterranean/Asian restaurant on the top of the boat. It is actually <i>good</i> food, a nice ambience and very nice view. This will also give you the chance to see the big floating restaurant (they have now added shops) and you can take the free little bum boat to and from the restaurant which is operated by Jumbo so you can get to see a little bit of the harbour (you can also hire your own boat for a longer tour which is still somewhat interesting, about a half hour is more than enough, don’t pay more than like US$20). Go to http://www.cafedecogroup.com/TOP_DECK/v_TOP_DECK.asp. As there is a shopping arcade on the boat now, you can also just take the little bum boat over, shop and then return without having to eat anything. The boat is kind of unique of course, and the harbour is interesting. A trip to Aberdeen can easily be done as part of a trip to Repulse Bay or Stanley.

Sorry I did not see the rest of your questions. About the taxi, I would not take one, I would take the #973 bus from the Central district area of Hong Kong, it starts in Kowloon so if you are staying on the Kowloon side you can get on board there and go through the tunnel over to Hong Kong. This bus will give you a quite pretty ride with views of the water after you leave the main city area. It’s a double-decker so sit on top, right side of the bus is slightly better for water views but does not matter much. The cost is about HK$9, or about US$1.25. You may have to ask someone where to get off for Aberdeen, but it is quite easy to do the bus. The ride from Central would take about 30-40 minutes. A taxi will cost you something in the neighborhood of HK$70-100. If you can tell me where you will be in Central or Kowloon, I can tell you where to get the bus
I am not sure what you mean in your post by “pier area”, but once you get to Aberdeen, the <i>only</i> way to get to the Jumbo restaurant is by the little boat operated by the restaurant. The Jumbo floats in the water several hundred yards offshore. Once you get off the bus in Aberdeen, and cross the main busy road via the pedestrian walkway, head toward the paved piazza area where there are several boat piers and a big sign which says “Jumbo Restaurant”. That is where you get the boat out to the restaurant. If you can’t find the piazza, just ask for the Jumbo, believe me, people will know that you are a tourist looking for it.
Top Deck is not cheap, but neither is the Chinese restaurant in the Jumbo. You may be able to see prices on the Top Deck website. Website for Jumbo is http://www.jumbo.com.hk/eng/main.php.
Note that all these places (and virtually every business in Hong Kong) will take credit cards, so don’t worry about having enough cash.

Thank you all for such a big help on my questions !!
and you have saved me from spending alot of money on mediocre food at a big tourist trap !!
Great help in getting around, too - we can take pictures and go to the shops.
And I found on another thread, the Goodwill Guide program.
Thanks, again.
