Hong Kong - ? - Tokyo

I am planning a RTW trip, most likely I will fly from Johanesburg to Hong Kong, I need to travel to Tokyo to connect to a flight to Hawaii. I would like to visit a place in between Hong Kong and Tokyo.

I will be travelling on Star Alliance airlines, and there Asian Airlines are Singapore Airlines, Thai, ANA, Asiana, Shanghai Alrines and Air China.


I have visited Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan in the past. I was hoping to visit a city in China (besides HKG) the Star Alliance network would allow me travel to Beijing (on Air China), Shanghai (on Shanghai AIrlines), Soeul (on Asiana). Unfortunately, I will be travelling at the end of November, I know it will be cold in all these places. Which place is best to visit? I think the Expo in Shanghai will have finished by the time I arrive in Asia, so this won't be an issue.

I am open to suggestions of other possible places to fly to in between Hong Kong and Japan, even if this involves a little more flying, provided the route can be done on Star Alliance carriers.
