1 am going to hong kong in march 2011 i am interested in buying clothes while i am there i just want to find out if quality clothes are cheaper in shenzen and if the difference is worth going there. I am a uk citizen and i had no plans visiting china before which would mean i would have to apply for a 5 day visa at the border with hong kong

It has been a few years but Shenzen is better known for inexpensive copies or fakes rather than quality clothes.
Last time we went to Shenzen (a few years ago) we found only very cheap knock offs. Not woth the hassel to go. If you go to the Hong Kong tourist office (I think there is one at star ferry still) they have a booklet about factory outlets ..or they use to . We found this the best source for quality and at very reasonable prices.
I am curious which factory outlets you visited, Karen....(??)
