Hong Kong in August - hotel question
I am looking for a hotel in Hong Kong the last week in August. I have been to HK before, but ages ago. Am going with student daughter, who has never been to HK, and will start a semester at university.
I was thinking about W hotel, but most posters here say the location is not so good.
Budget of about 3500 HK. Any recommendations?

Your budget is 3500 HK per week? Some locals, or Chinese visitors, could find rooms that low for a week but you would struggle. I'm not enamored with the Central high rise scene nor Mong Kok cement jungle so i would invite you to consider the Regal Riverside in Sha Tin. With nearby MTR trains and buses to everywhere and peaceful walks along the river, or catch nearby ferry to outer islands, etc, seems reasonable to me. Maybe u.

The university is in Bluewater Bay - HKUST. I don't really want to stay near there, but it's probably easier to get there from Kowloon.
3500/night - I was looking at W, since I may have some Starwood points that I can use. I now see that the Sheraton is probably a better location, and less expensive than W. We would like to be able to walk to the Star ferry.

I don't like the location of the W, you cannot walk to anything. You also won’t have views (although they do have a very cool rooftop pools which has some good ones). If you want to be in that area, then stay at the Ritz-Carlton which has THE view and in August is should be quite clear and amazing (chance of rain of course). But also not walkable to anything.
If you want to use points, then the Sheraton is a better choice. Good views (make sure you get a harbour view) and walkable to many things, including the Star Ferry. You have a nice budget, so you could consider others. The Peninsula and Intercontinental should be in that budget and also close to the Sheraton. On the Hong Kong side you could look at the Four Seasons. The JW Marriott, Island Shangri-La or Conrad would also work. The Upper House is in this same complex, but has no pool, and in August you will want one. (Four Seasons has the biggest and best, IMO. ) See what the Mandarin is charging for those dates (indoor pool only).
It makes no difference in terms of ease of getting to HKUST whether you stay on the Kowloon side or the Hong Kong side. It may save you 3 minutes to take the MTR from the Kowloon side, but I would not stay on the Kowloon side solely for that reason.
One thing to possibly consider is the East Hotel in Quarry Bay. It is on the line over to Yau Tong, which is a bit faster way to get to HKUST. The hotel has some very nice views and a W-like vibe. Very nice rooftop restaurant and bar and nice outdoor pool. The neighborhood is a mix of office buildings and residential. There is not a whole lot to do there, although there are a few good restaurants and some old neighborhood markets. But it would be something different. If you are not going out to HKUST every day, then staying in Central or TST may be better from a sight-seeing point of view. But see http://www.east-hongkong.com/en/default.aspx

Thank you Cicerone, very useful advice! If it doesn't make much of a difference in getting to HKUST, I'll look at the hotels on the HK side. We'll be there a few days before term starts, and I'm sure the student will need to do some shopping...
The Four Seasons website is quoting rooms from 4700 (harbour view 5200).
The East Hotel looks fantastic - maybe next time.

Let me clarify a little. Even from TST, the fastest way to get to UST is to take MTR via HK Island to Hang Hau station, so there is no advantage for staying in TST. But the 4S is quite a bit of a walk via the tunnel to get to the Island Line trains.

Just a thought, but IMO the best shopping mall in HK is City Plaza in Quarry Bay (Tai Koo MTR), which is where the East Hotel is located. They have bascially every shop you can imagine, plus a few you can't like Muji (great home shop) and Uniqlo (clothing the college age would love). See http://www.cityplaza.com/
The only thing missing is an Ikea (although the Wing On in City Plaza is excllent for kitchen, hardware and housewares and cheaper than Muji), but you can go to the Ikea in Causeway Bay via the subway quickly, or go to the one in Megabox Mall in Kowloon Bay (also another good mall, with a large Muji as well.)
Shopping in Central is mainly fashion and is quite expensive. Pedder building has some homeware shops and a good kitchen and bath shop, but they are expensive. Gough Stree and the Peel Street areas are possiblilites for some home furnishings. There is a Wing On Dept store in Sheung Wan which is great for kitchens, bedding, etc. See http://www.wingonet.com/ for all locations.

Ask about room size, Marriott can be on the small side. That would be a factor to me. Also, if you want twins beds, ask aobut that as well. Not all hotel rooms here have those (and double doubles, common in the US are even rarer).
For the Penn, you won't have a harbour view so I personally would not stay there, lovely as that hotel is.
The Island Shangri-La is more luxe than the Marriott, but both are in the same complex and location is good, walkable to Peak Tram and Central, one a subway and major bus lines, walkable to Wan Chai shops and restaurants. Both have nice pool areas.

I have just returned from a two night stopover in HK from Oz, we stayed in the Hotel Icon. Absolutely amazing!!! The service was impeccable, check the reviews out on tripadvisor!

we stayed there for three nights last November and really for the price [and probably quite a lot more] it couldn't be bettered. Lovely room, great bathroom, and wonderful view. plus the facilities of the hotel AND the YMCA. Many thanks again to the kind person here who recommended it.
