hong kong cooking classes

I had a day long class with Martha Sherpa whose school is in Mong Kok. It was excellent! She has classes of varying prices and times depending on what she's teaching at the time. This is her link: http://www.cookery.com.hk. We prepared three dishes from scratch, then she demonstrated three more. After the class finished at about 4:00 p.m., she took us out to the night market in Mong Kok and roamed through the neighborhood shops for a couple of more hours. Her school was featured in an article in Gourmet the month after I arrived home.

The HK tourist board recommended a couple of other schools, but they wanted to have a class of at least ten students that I would arrange for them.

I should mention that her classroom is immediately adjacent to a subway stop, so easy (ier) to find. HK people don't really use street numbers, just descriptions of the physical setting of the locale. We exited the subway, crossed two streets at the intersection, then slithered through a small door, went up an elevator several floors, walked around for a few minutes, then found the door. Do not be deterred! It will be worth it.

The cooking school listed above certainly seems interesting, I have not taken any classes there. The YWCA on MacDonnell Road offers a lot of different type of classes. I have taken cooking courses through the American Women’s Association here, principally taught by Lavinia Hemandas and Seema Bhatia. I believe Seema also teaches classes at the YWCA. Lavina can be reached at 852-2838- 2199; I am not sure that she does private lessons but it is certainly worth asking her or you could join her next class offering. Lavina does a lot of Indian and SE Asian and also Chinese, Seema does a lot of Thai and other SE Asian.

It is my understanding that restuarnts like Lung King Heen at the Four Seasons (3 Michelin star Cantonese fusion) and Bo Innovation (2 Michelin star Asian fusion) will provide private cooking lessons for a farily steep price, you might contact your hotel concierge or the restaurants directily, see http://www.fourseasons.com/hongkong/ and http://www.boinnovation.com/

IMO just a good thing to do is go to any of the smaller restaurants here and ask about preparation, ask to speak with chef and staff. The “private kitchens” like Gitone Fine Arts or Xin Yan would be a good place to try, they have a small number of tables and the chef can come speak with you during dinner. I have attended 6 Asian (indian & Pakistani) cookery classes from Coriander Connections at Repulse Bay. Shahnaz Barker who runs and also doees the private catering. The recipes are extremely given in detail and explains about the spices and various uses, cooking and medicinal iformation.

Mostly classes are fully booked.
