Hong Kong - affordable hotel?
Hi, we are budget travelers traveling to Hong Kong next month over Christmas/NYS. I know Hong Kong is expensive but we have lucked out many times and have found gems using these boards and lots of research.
We were wondering if anyone can advise on a hotel/inn/guestroom that is less than $75 for a couple. We would like close to major areas or scenic area or near metro. We don't care for amenities like big-screen TV, swimming pool, restaurant, gym, etc. but like someplace clean, nice and love places that have a lot of character and interesting than modernity
Thanks!

Try Standford Hillview (beware: there's 2 of them called Standford) in Tsim Sha Tsui. It's about the cheapest I could find for such a good location. You can take the airport express train to Kowloon station, and from there get on the K5 shuttle bus for free and get off at the Empire hotel (just across from the Standford). I have a friend who stayed there and thought it was pretty good for the price. Try to book well in advance, it gets full quickly because of the price and location.

$75 may not buy you any of the hotels mentioned above. If you really have to stay below the budget, try the Caritas Bianchi lodge, which is just off Nathan Road, and is not far from MTR or buses. [Keep in mind that many hotels in HK put on an extra 10% "service charge" to their roomrates.]
Hong Kong really doesn't have many affordable small hotels, and definitely no "lovely" or "interesting" ones at this price point, unless you consider guesthouses located in old mix-use commercial buildings "interesting".

I recently stayed at the Salisbury YMCA (it is a hotel run by the YMCA organization, not a "Y" and found it a great value. The location is superb, the facilities fine (not 5 star but modern, clean, and comfortable) and the service quite pleasant. Online at www.ymcahk.org. They post specials, but you can also email and request a quote for the exact dates you want. I got a great deal for a weekly stay in November.
