Hi,
I’m going on holiday to Japan in September and I can’t wait!
I’m looking into getting a Japan rail pass. I was wondering if it is worth paying extra for the first class Japan train travel when I’m out there. Any thoughts?

Someone else posted about Green Car (as 1st class is known) recently. You might want to search for that thread.
IMO, standard class is perfectly fine. Whether it makes economic sense to get the pass depends on how much domestic traveling you're planning to do.
Sept should not be that busy, except I recall there was one holiday weekend. Early Sept may be still quite warm in Tokyo.
Curi5ous,
It depends where you want to go. According to this website http://www.insidejapantours.com/JRP_FAQ.html the ‘Green Carriages’ (first class) are not on local trains. But last year I was there and found first class Japan rail travel to be extremely comfortable and a lot less crowded!
Hope that helps – have a great Japanese holiday!
