Hi all! I'm planning to visit Hokaido with my family next month (december) but because its a last minute decision, i haven't had time to do any research. I would really appreciate it if anyone out there who has been to hokaido before could give me some advise on where to go, what to do, accommodation and etc. I'm just wondering whether hokaido is easy to explore on our own without joining a tour??
please help. Thanks heaps!!!

Trip Ideas
I planned for 18 months before we went to Hokkaido.....but you still have time, lol
At that time of year your driving is limited to the day hours mostly because of the wintry weather conditions and the shorter day light. You should plan to be in and around the Sapporo-Asahikawa areas for the skiing and winter activities with a day trip to Otaru from Sapporo if you are a serious sushi enthusiast. A trip to an onsen in Noboribetsu from Sapporo is also an excellent idea.
The travel between these cities by rail and bus is reliable but subject to wintry conditions as stated above.
I'll list a few sites with travel information on the places I recommend but also recommend you do a little research on where you want to go and what you want to see. Hokkaido is the easiest place in Japan to travel imho if you do a little pre planning.

if you enjoy 2 to 7 feet high snow, this is so keen !
see if you can find old style lodging, not in the farms, but
stay closer to the big cities, like sapporo, hakodate, etc..
or, at least, in the jap.inns.. ryokans...
