Hoi An trip report -- where to have clothes made
If you wish to have clothing made in Hoi An, we highly recommend the Fine Arts-Handicraft Workshop at 41 Le Loi Street. You walk in and go upstairs where the fabric is located and where they will take your measurements. We were part of a cruise group and we were at this shop at 11am; by 5pm they had delivered the finished silk jacket to the ship at the Danang port (45 minutes away). It fit perfectly!

I am in Hoi An right (at Life Resort's computer) now waiting to pick up some clothes at Yalys. If I could give one tip about the custom clothing process here it would be to bring a sample of the item you want to have made. You will have much better luck if they have the original to copy from.
I had things made from an original brought from home, from a photo brought from home, and also from an item on hand at the shop. Guess which one was the most successful? Pay attention to stitching, linings, cut of the cloth..there are so many things that enter into a good-looking garment that might not seem obvious....
Anyway...off to Yaly/s now...

ekscruchy,
I'm jealous. Good luck with your custom clothing at Yaly. That is a really chic shop, isn't it? They has some women's styles that are far more "fashion forward" than I anticipated in Hoi An.
If you haven't been, stop at Tam Tam for lunch or dinner. It's on Nguyen Thai Hoc near the Japanese bridge. We loved it. A French fellow named Christophe owns it. Great international crowd and wonderfully fun. However, you probably know a lot more about Hoi An then I.

Thanks, Boston. I left this morning and am now in Hue at La Residence. The weather is really horrid, nothing but rain in Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hoi an and now Hue..so more computer time, I guess!
Anyway, the clothing at Yaly turned out well. I truly did not see anything too tempting in their shop, though...I guess it is all about personal taste. Next time I would bring a few more favorite things from home as they did MUCH better with copying that with interpreting, even though I had them do one item from a (blurry) photo. I have to admit I did not spend all that much time there as did not want to waste time that could be spent just walking around. I found it interesting to speak with the saleswoman and to see the sewing area downstairs (in their large shop near Life Resort)
Anyway, thanks for your good wishes..your report was wonderful and helped me a lot...I did not get to Tam Tam but did eat twice at Morning Glory nearby which I would also recommend...I will have a look at your Saigon report now..

Hi everyone,
Just want to give everyone a word of caution about gettting clothers made in Hoi An. I had a jacket made at a reputable establiishment with psecific instruction to use a particular cloth. What I ended up with was a jacket made with a lower quality material. I complained and they quickly returned my deposit because there were other customers in the store at the time. I also had a white cotton shirt made at another store. Despite 2 attempst in making the shirt. The front of the shirt was shorter than the back and there was an excessive amount of material on either side of the shoulders near the neck.
My suggestions to all travellers is to ask for a sample of the cloth and to pay a minimum deposit with the agreement that after 1 or 2 attempts that your deposit should be returned without any difficulties. I hope my experience is an anomally, but based on the respose of fellow travellors most of them were disappointed with the fitting. I hope you all have better luck.

Sorry, but after my mìsfortunes in getting something made in Hoi An, I dícarded all the rêcipts but I ưent to two very reputable tailors. In any case get a sample òf the cloth and give them á little deposit as possible. Based on my díscussion with other travellers it took 2 to 4 fittings before they were reasonably happy. Ùnfortunately thís may take more than a couple ò dáys. Gôod luck everyone.
Please ẽxcuse all the mispellings and accent marks but I can't sêem to get this Vietnam Keyboard to work.
PS. walk dơwn some of the allies in Hoi An and you will sêe some òf young kids putting together your clothes. Also I can't nderstand ưhy they don't use a chalk mảker on the second fitting to make fine adjustments. Ínstead they continue to úse a tape measure.
