Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Travel agent said that this is a crowded and dirty city and not to go. Is she correct?

If I had time for only one city in VN, I'd choose Hanoi over HCMC. Does that mean it isn't worth visiting? Of course not.

All of us have to make decisions about what to cut in our itineraries, and if your agent was suggesting you cut HCMC rather than another place, that's one thing. If s/he said it's a crowded and dirty city and not to go, then I agree with degas.

By the way, most of us here do not use travel agents to plan our trips. Many of them seem to be an unnecessary cost, and some try to steer people to places they'll get the most commission from rather than what you'd like best. I'd say to re-consider whether you need a travel agent for this trip.

What other cities does she think are crowded and dirty? Come to that, what cities does she think are NOT crowded and dirty?

I agree with Kathie that I would chose Hanoi over Saigon, but I still visited Saigon, and am glad I did. A lot depends on your interests and why you're thinking of going.

Have you looked at any guidebooks? Why are you using an agent?

RuthLee,
It's true most of us plan and book our own holidays.
My advice is to ditch your agent and plan your own holiday.EG where you would like to visit most how many days you wish to stay in each place. Then make all your bookings on line. Here are a few pointers to get you started.Check which is the cheapest airfare online before booking(much cheaper than a agency)

This has hotels to fit most budgets = www.hostelworld.com

This is the cheapest airline for (budget)domestic airfares to get you to most cities or towns in Vietnam)
www.jetstar.com
hope this is of some help to you.

I agree with the rest. But not everybody feels comfortable going it alone the first time. As Degas said, get another travel agent - fast.

And send her a copy of this correspondence. She sounds like a fool.

I wonder how many times your travel agent has been to Saigon, or to SE Asia, for that matter!

Every large Asian city is "crowded!" What city is not crowded? What city does not have "dirty" parts? Even Zurich has its dicey areas!

For the record, I love Saigon, but there are not as many "sights" as in the other places you are considering..
