Help with Tokyo Hotel
DH and I are going to Tokyo in late Oct. for the GTG. We unfortunately put off making our hotel reservations at the Citidines Shinjuku and now they are full. We put it off because DH may have a few days of business to conduct there and we were waiting to see how that played out.
I am looking for hotel recommendations that are less than $200 a night and conveniently located.
Any suggestions? I will do my homework and search the Forums now also, but am a little panicked now. Thank you in advance for any help!! I am also away from home and don't have my guidebook with me to help.

Florida, don't panic, there are tonnes of decently priced and well located hotel rooms still in Tokyo. I know because I finally booked mine this morning, also for a late October trip.
Firstly, decide which station(s) you would like to be closest too.
My shortlist last time/ this time includes Asakusa, Shinjuku, Ueno and Higashi Ginza.
Now use something like Booking.com to view hotels near that station, narrow down to those with best locations, reviews, prices and availability. Not every single one will be available but plenty are.
Last time, we looked at a Tokyu Stay in Higashi Ginza which would be perfect for Tsukiji Fish Market in particular (and Ginza generally). We cancelled because the fish market was closed for our dates, as I discovered just a few days before we travelled. This time, it doesn't fit in with our plans either, but the correspondence I had with them was good and it looks decent enough.
We stayed in various Dormy Inn hotels last time and are also using them again on this trip. The larger Western-Japanese combined rooms in the Asakusa branch were spacious (same small bathrooms) and the location good.
And because we made a last minute booking, the Century Southern Tower at Shinjuku fell into budget range too and location was superb for us to start our first trip to Japan we felt.
This time, I'm doing 1 night in a hotel by Tokyo station and 2 later nights near Ueno in a Mitsui Garden (which friends have used and is definitely below your budget).
There are LOTS of options.

Thank you Kavey! I'm feeling better already! Will look into the hotels you have listed too! We will likely be spending a few days in Kyoto, so may split our Tokyo time between two places and you have given us some other neighborhoods to check out! Thanks again!

If you're going to the Tokyo GTG, it would make sense to stay somewhere near Roppongi, or even Shibuya. I find Roppongi to be a more pleasant place to stay than Shinjuku, anyway, and it's also way closer to many of the places that visitors head to in central Tokyo (Ginza, Tsukiji, etc.). There's a B Hotel in Roppongi -- I haven't stayed there, but others on this forum have found the B chain to be a great value. The Grand Hyatt is in Roppongi and is opne of the better hotels in Tokyo -- it's not cheap, but if you happen to be over 62 their Senior rate is not much more than $200/nite.

I've stayed at the B Roppongi a couple of times. Pleasant, clean decent size room. Free computers in the lobby 2 years ago. Very helpful staff and a great location. It's less than a minute to the Roppongi station, which has both JR and subway lines.

You might check out Hotel Mystays - a small chain - I stayed in the one at Hamamatsucho due to its proximity to the monorail to HND as I had an early am departure. I stayed there first in Fukuoka.
I haven't seen the double room but the single is quite comfy and a step or two above my usual budget chain - Toyoko Inn. ;-)

Glad you're feeling better. Definitely don't panic, and take your time. If you find somewhere you like as a holder, you can book without paying anything on booking.com (payment on arrival, credit card taken for guarantee only) with the free cancellation. Just check your hotel does offer that, most seem to. I'm so grateful to others here for putting me on to that, last time I used Agoda.com which I was very happy with too but had to pay upfront there.
When we did our last (first) trip we spent 2 nights in Shinjuku on arrival and 4 nights in Asakusa before departure. That worked very well for us, we appreciated splitting the time between two locations as Tokyo is like several mini-cities next to each other, it doesn't have one single "downtown" like most cities have.
I'd bow to others in terms of Shibuya over Shinjuku, I've not stayed in enough locations in Tokyo to contribute. Can only say where we did stay and were happy with. By the way, Century Southern Tower in Shinjuku is showing as US$205 for some dates in late October...
One of the factors for us was choosing stations which had direct connection to Narita Airport, though in retrospect the metro wasn't at all difficult, I'm still happy we kept things simple on arrival.
The more experienced Tokyo travellers here can advise on that too.
I'm sad I will miss the GTG as though we'll be in Japan then, we'll be in completely the wrong part. But if anyone wants to email with a view to meeting in Kyoto, I'm contactable at kaveyf at hotmail dot com. x

Thank you again, Kavey and Mara! My panic attack is officially over!
Kavey, as soon as we know our dates for Kyoto, I will send you an e-mail. We'd love to meet up with you if our dates align!
I will probably be posting a few more questions here in the next month as our trip gets closer.
