Hi All...have truly enjoyed reading all of your trip comments/suggestions and am finally getting around to the final details of our trip (31 Jan-16 Feb.) which
tentatively looks like this:
31 Jan (PM) Depart Bkk by train to N. Thailand cross into Laos via Freedom Bridge. Tuk-Tuk into Vientien.
1-2 Feb. In Vientiane
3-8 Feb. Bus (10 Hr.) to Luang Prabang. Stay in Le Calao Inn. Cook Class Tum Tum cook school. Day trips etc.
9-10 Feb. River boat via Pakbeng to Huay Xai. Cross over into Thailand at Chiang Khong. Travel by bus to Chiang Rai.
11-13 Feb. Stay Chiang Rai.
Day trips/or 2 day trek into Hill country.
14 Feb-Bus into Chiang Mai/late evening train back into Bangkok
15-16 Feb. Bangkok
17 Feb.-Depart for US
Questions...We have spent time in Bangkok before so will not take too much time this trip. Would appreciate any recommendations concerning a place to stay in Vientiane ( something centrally located) As well as a day tour we might try. Some recommendations concerning setting up day trips from Luang Prabang to include day trips up into the Hill Villages/sites not to miss etc. as well as best way to set up river trip/local tour companies etc. would be helpful. Once we get into Chiang Rai....hotel suggestions/restaurents etc. as well as setting up possible trek into Hill Villages. I realize this is somewhat of a ambitious trip but we do want to see/do as much as we can but at the same time have enough time to enjoy it. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Bob

When I was in Luang Prabang this past spring, I hired a guide man from the hotel at US$20 per day and he in turn found a driver (maybe his brother-in-law) with an air-conditioned car for another US$20 per day.
I had them take me around town and the outskirts for 3 days; one day I had them bring me down to the Pak Ou caves, which I heartily recommend.
Hope this helps. Luang Prabang is actually a small town, and hiring persons is fairly casual. For the sum of US$40 per day I was treated like a maharaja.
