Help with hotel in Shanghai, and Beijing

We are not certain whether to stay at the Hua Ting Hotel and Towers, or the Holiday Inn Downtown in Shanghai. Does anyone have suggestions? They are listed as a 5 star and 3 star respectively, but I don't know how accurate the star rating system is over there. In Beijing I upgraded to the Novotel Hotel across from the Palace. Any comments? Thanks, Bette

My wife and I were very satisfied with Novotel Peace Hotel (across from Palace Hotel) in Beijing when we stayed there in the fall of '02. Be sure you stay in the east building (where we stayed). I believe the west building is one star lower in rating. Our only complaint is that the bed was extremely hard. Fortunately after 1-2 nights we got used to it. We will stay there again. Buffet breakfasts and separately the French pastries were great !

I remember seeing the Holiday Inn Downtown in Shanghai when we were there in May. It's in a great location. We stayed at the Sofitel so I can't comment on the hotel, though.

The Hua Ting is an older hotel. I stayed there 12 years ago when it used the be the Sheraton Hua Ting. It's really not what you'd imagine a "5 star" hotel to be. I haven't stayed at the Holiday Inn but it's near the railway station north of Suzhou creek, about 3 metro stops north of People's square on line 1. Actually both the Holiday Inn and the Hua Ting are on the same metro line just at opposite ends. The Holiday Inn may be slightly closer to the majority of the tourist sites but transportation wise, neither one is a problem.
