Help with hotel in Saigon - An Lam Saigon River or Hotel des Arts??
We are heading back to Saigon at the end of a 3-week trip. This will be our third visit to Saigon. We are 60 and 70 years old, we've seen all the sights in the city, we are foodies so we love the availability of sensational restaurants, and the shopping.
We've only stayed in District 1 and we 'were' planning to stay again because there is so much going on right out side your hotel door. We were considering Hotel des Arts which sounds like a great new place.
Then I stumbled upon a raving review of An Lam Saigon River hotel. It looks amazing and totally different than any place in District 1. An Lam is right on the river, beautifully appointed, secluded, serene and away from all the action of District 1.
I am ready to book a room at An Lam but my husband is concerned it is too remote. I think that after 3 weeks of travel - R&R sounds good to me. We've seen all the sights so I think taking their speedboat shuttle will make it easy to revisit but then head back to relax.
Has anyone stayed at An Lam? Are there restaurants or sites to be seen in this neighborhood?
I need help convincing my husband that this would be a perfect end to our trip. Any help would be great.
Thanks!

The Hotel Des Arts is a McGallery Collection ( Accor ) hotel. Whilst I haven't stayed in that one, I have stayed in several Mc Gallery hotels and have been very impressed. The one in Bangkok is my favourite in that city and I Hanover stayed in all the usual suspects over the years. The just seem different, a bit more "club like " than most 5 * places.
Huge number of restaurants around that part of D1 but for more local, better and cheaper food, head to district 3 a 15 min walk away. That is were we stayed last year and never ran out of great places to even though we were here for a couple of weeks?
The An Lam Saigon River looks fantastic and a great place to chill out, but district 12 is way out of the centre. 30-40 mins driving, more in rush hour.
If the hotel has REGULAR boat transfers that don't take to long, it may be a great place to stay. Last year we took my in laws to the Anatara Riverside in Bangkok and they loved their 15 min daily commute on the river to see the sights. Being on the river was a pleasantly cool respite from the Bangkok heat - I am sure the same would be the case in Saigon but not if you have to wait an hour for a boat!
Apart from the hotel, I think it is largely a residential and commercial area. Probably has some great food around but you will have to search for it and little or no English will likely be spoken.

Here you are, some info regarding the 2 places:
1- AN LAM RIVERSIDE
Address: 21/4 Trung Street, Vĩnh Phú, Thuận An, Bình Dương
Set on the banks of the Saigon River, this upscale hotel with traditional architectural details is 14 km from the 19th-century Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica and 15 km from the War Remnants Museum.
Featuring private balconies and glass-walled bathrooms, the chic suites have sitting areas and most have canopy beds. There are also 7 2-bedroom villas; some have river views, open-air showers and/or private plunge pools.
There's an open-air restaurant/bar with river views. Other amenities include an outdoor pool with a sundeck and lounge chairs, as well as a chic spa and a gym.
2- Hotel des Arts Saigon MGallery Collection
Address: 76 78 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Str, District 3, HCMC
Set on a bustling street in the city center, this elegant hotel with a streamlined, concrete facade is a 6-minute walk from Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica and a 12-minute walk from Independence Palace
Featuring rainfall showerheads and floor-to-ceiling windows with city views, the polished rooms and suites come with free Wi-Fi and smart TVs, as well as minibars and tea and coffeemakers. Room service is offered.
Dining options include 2 refined restaurants, 1 with a terrace and a gourmet European menu. There are also 3 bars, including 1 at the outdoor rooftop pool. Other amenities include a spa, a gym and 2 tennis courts. Bike rentals are offered.
The voice from a local perspective:
Option 2 is right at the city center considerably, walking around for food, entertainments...easily.
Option 1 is nice, quiet and quite far away from down town of Saigon. All services have to be in-door.
