Help with figuring our 19-day Japan trip

Jump to last reply

My husband and I are taking our first trip to Japan April 7-25. Many thanks to all who have posted here and helped me put together an itinerary thus far. We are used to driving everywhere and the need to take public transportation has flummoxed me a bit. I imagine when you are actually traveling it is easier, but it makes the planning harder I think! I have questions posted in the itinerary as you look at it. Thanks for any advice. (We are active 60-year-olds, and we like a combination of culture and nature; I'm a little worried about overdoing the temple-viewing.)

JAPAN ITINERARY

April 7: Leave Miami

April 8-9-10: Arrive Tokyo. Stay: Intercontinental on ihg points

April 11: Go to Hakone by train, stay Hakone somewhere for 2 nights

April 12: Hakone

April 13: Go to Kanazawa; all day travel. An organized tour itinerary that I was consulting said you take the shinkansen from Odawara to Nagoya, then take a Limited Express train to Kanazawa. Does this sound like a good plan? I would like to stay in Hakone overnight, but I could just go on a day trip and then leave for Kanazawa from Tokyo. Stay Kanazawa for 3 nights, somewhere

April 14: Kanazawa

April 15: Kanazawa Here I was planning on renting a car and driving the Noto peninsula, as we love rural areas and seacoasts. Alternatively, or the day before, I could do the villages Shirakawa-go and Gokayama. AND: Should I try to take a day from somewhere else and go to Takayama for a day? Someone told me there's a festival in Takayama around this time, which could be good or bad!

April 16: Train to Kyoto. Not sure if you go back through Nagoya and change or if there are better ways. Stay Kyoto for five nights, somewhere.

April 17: Kyoto, explore

April 18: Kyoto, day trip to Nara and Fushimi

April 19: Kyoto, day trip Arahiyama

April 20: Kyoto

April 21: Is it possible to do a trip to Koyosan and a temple stay then go the next day to Hiroshima? Or is that too complicated? I could do one less day in Kyoto. Or is there somewhere else to be doing a temple stay and then skip Koyosan?

April 22: Travel somehow to Hiroshima; afternoon to explore; stay.

April 23: Go to and stay at Miyajima island

April 24: Take ferry and train back to Hiroshima. Or, I could do Miyajima as a day trip and then do an inland sea islands day trip on this day.

April 25: Leave from Hiroshima to Osaka Airport KIX
