Has anyone taken a cruise around Japan?
Hello,
I am posting for a friend who asked my advice about the LuxuryTour.com Clipper Odyssey Cruise for the American Horticulture Society. We've both been to Kyoto before and he wants to see more. He wants to take a tour, but with a sympatico small group. I've been researching it, but can't find out much. The cruise ship sails from Hakodate (on the northern end of Japan) and makes its way along the west side of Japan ending up at Himeji. Anyone cruised in Japan? Ideas on how to get passenger reviews of the ship? (I tried Cruise.com but the ship isn't reviewed.) Thanks for any help.

Hello again,
I made a mistake in my post. The company that sponsors this tour is Haertter Travel out of St. Louis. I also found another cruise site that had one review of the Clipper Odyssey (cruisemates.com). But if anyone has any other ideas, would love your suggestions! Thanks.

That is an interesting itinerary and the horticulture folks should love it.

The map is incorrect: switch the names in the boxes for Uwajima and Miyajima. Miyajima is the one near Hiroshima with Uwajima to the southeast.
In the May 17 description of the visit to Matsue it mentions Kuizumi Yakumo. You can find some of his books to read under his orignal western name of Lafcadio Hearn. I think that Kokoro is his most famous book.
The tour description mentions Izumo but does not actually say that Izumo Taisha will be visited. That would be a shame. The document says that the boat docks at Sakai. I see a town called Sakaiminato (South Sakai) on the coast, so that must be it. It is east of Matsue. Izumo is west of Matsue. The tour says that it goes from Sakai to Matsue and returns. Izumo is not enroute. I would go to Izumo Taisha instead of the Lafcadio Hearn stuff, and even skip the gardens.
On May 18, the boat stops in Hagi. The tour description doesn't mention visiting Hagi castle. The castle was torn down and only the foundation remains, but it is a nice peaceful place to visit and nice grounds (though not a full-on Japanese garden, IIRC). Plus, the itin description doesn't mention that Hagi is a good place to shop for pottery.
May is a great time for this trip. Your friend will want to be on deck when approaching Nagasaki.

Oh, you came back. I thought about it and I guess it makes sense to stay in Matsue instead of going to Izumo. The sights in Matsue are in a fairly compact area. Izumo if farther, about 30 minutes on a train and then 20 minutes on a street car. So, it would cost around two hours of travel time. They will already be doing enough travel that day from Sakai to Matsue and back.
