Hello, Vietnam

You should fly into Hong Kong. You can take a non-stop flight in less than 2 hours from Hanoi, and then just take the ferry right from the airport to Macau (it goes to Macau airport, but then you can get a bus or taxi to other parts of Macau). The ferry trip is about an hour. All in, this is probably going to be your fastest and best option, IMO. For info on the ferry from Hong Kong airport, go to http://www.hongkongairport.com/eng/aguide/skypier.html
There don’t appear to be any non-stop flights between Hanoi and Macau. There are flights to Macau from Bangkok, Beijing, Jakarta, Manila, Shanghai, Seoul, Singapore and Taipei just to name a few, and lots of secondary cities in the PRC. Take a look at the website for Macau airport at http://www.macau-airport.com/en/v02/03_flight_arrival.php to see what airlines fly in from what cities. You then need to get to Hanoi from those cities. I imagine getting to Bangkok, Beijing or Shanghai, would not be difficult, albiet it is a bit out of the way; i.e. it appears it would take 11- 13 hours to fly via Shanghai or Bangkok.
If you take a bus overland, you would need a visa for the PRC for that trip.
Actually, the ferry from HKG goes to the regular Jetfoil ferry in Macau. The pier at MFM (Macau Airport) isn't completed yet.
The ferry from HKG to Macau isn't that frequent, with only 5 departures/day. But the nice thing is that they don't even have to go through Hong Kong immigration.
Alternatively, you can take the airport bus A11, which has a stop right in front of the ferry terminal on HK Island for Macau. That bus runs every 20 minutes, takes 30 minutes. Ferry runs every 15 minutes. Total cost will be about the same as the ferry from HKG to Macau is a little bit more expensive then the one from Hong Kong Island.
thanks for that guys. i bought a ticket to hong kong from hanoi for saturday so its sorted but i was wondering do i need a visa for china if i'm just gonna get the ferry to macau straight from the airport?
Assuming you are a US citizen, you do NOT need a visa to land or travel in Hong Kong, and you do not need a visa to enter Macau. Very few other nationalities require visas for Hong Kong or Macau, check websites if you are not a US citizen, I only know the rules for US (I believe UK, Canada, most UK Commonwealth, most EU countries are OK too).
If you are travelling any where else in the PRC proper, you will need a visa regardless of what country you are from.
