Hanoi's riverscape is flat and turgid and, sad to say, dull. Except for small boat traffic, it offers little in the way of picturesque panorama. The city clutter pushes to the riverbanks, so even seeing the water takes some effort. It might be better to seek out a tall hotel with a rooftop bistro.
But look the other way, inward. Lakes pockmark this sprawling city. Tourists are content to stroll around the pond at Hoan Kiem, hoping to glimpse its ancient turtle, but there are other and much larger lakes which offer cafe terraces where a pleasant breeze may be caught over a cup of coffee.
