Halfway between Yangon and NYC to meet family on vacation
Planning a July trip to meet family, currently living in Yangon. Will spend approximately one week together and then bring 8 and 4 year old grand children back to New York for an extended visit.
Destination must be out of monsoon season effects and suitable for children. Neither family wishes more than 2 flight changes each way.
Please help, one suggestion is Sri Lanka, but weather looks impacted by rains and too far for NY family. Possibly, Bali, Indonesia looks like good weather, but far for US family.
Anything more central?

A city like Tokyo or Hong Kong would have the best air connections with both NYC and Yangon. Both are expensive cities.
There really is no halfway point - air connections in/out of Yangon are somewhat limited. Places like Australia and New Zealand would be very long flights for both parties.
Bali is a good option. Yes, it is a long way from NYC, but may well be the best option, as it is less expensive than Tokyo, Hong Kong or Singapore.

Non-stop destinations out of Yangong are limited but they can get to Singapore. Singapore to HI would require a connection but it is still a fairly easy routing considering where they are originating.
Or - the Yangong airport website says there are flights to Narita -- if so, lots of non-stops to HI so that would be flat easy.
Otherwise -- if you want it short/easy/cheap from Yangong, then the ones flying from NYC will be doing the heavy lifting -- so in essence you could meet up anywhere in Asia.

Most everyone I know in the US says they'd love to come down here to Australia but that it's too far. We're 16 hours *in the air* just from LAX. So that side of your family might be hard to convince that Australia (or New Zealand) is a good "halfway point" 
We're further for either of you than is Bali, at least in a straight line.
Seems to me it's easier to get from NYC to the upper east coast of Asia. Hong Kong, Tokyo, Beijing or Seoul I'm guessing would be available as non-stops for them (polar route). But no idea where it's easy to get to from Yangon other than the obvious Bangkok and Singapore.

Put this way - It's about 10k miles from JFK-LAX-SYD, (because there are no non-stops, only "direct" to SYD which means they land in LA or Dallas, then continue on after waiting as they take on more passengers.) JFK to Tokyo though is only 6745. They're going to have to go through somewhere to get to Bali, as there are (as far as I know,) no direct flights from the US. So they'll fly to one of those coastal cities or Singapore or Bangkok to get there anyway.
Cost is an interesting wrinkle though. We're booked into Hong Kong ourselves on an upcoming trip and IMO, it isn't easy to find cheap lodging there (but food and such is very reasonable). Maybe China? (then you've got the visa stuff...) Taiwan? Not sure if Eva Air is still doing non-stop from NYC into TPE. Is getting out of Tokyo and finding an atmospheric, maybe scenic, smaller town in Japan possible on a budget? I've never been...

If you're thinking about Bali I'm inferring you'd like a beach or undeveloped location versus a city. If that's the case then I wouldn't rule out Bali even though the distance from New York may be greater than you'd like.
There are several options for getting to Bali from New York with only one stop, Cathay Pacific is one, there are others. My preference would be on Singapore Airlines, which would mean two stops, but very good connections. Your family can also get from Yangon to Bali with one stop, for example AirAsia through KL.
Weather in Bali is good in July, and it's a wonderful kid-friendly location, both at the beach and inland in the Ubud area.
You might look at the east coast of Thailand, e.g., Koh Samui, which should also have good weather in July. It's geographically closer, but not hugely different in travel time from New York.

ANA flies daily RGN-NRT. That's the "most central" of all places. Tokyo is 6.5 hours from Yangon, and about 14 from New York City. Both with non-stop flights.
Seoul is similar as Korean flies daily RGN-ICN. Just a little further from NYC than for Tokyo.
Tokyo is not exactly expensive. With the yen this low, it's not hard to find hotels (albeit small rooms) for <$150 a night. And eats for <$10 a meal. Hotels are cheaper in Tokyo than Hong Kong or Singapore.

Other Asian locations are appealing to me, but family living in Yangon have travelled to some other areas and we want to find a new experience for us both.
Any one want to share information on Indonesia/Bali, it would be welcomed?
Thinking maybe 2 nights in Hong Kong, on to Bali, one weeks travel with my husband and one week with the family.
Suggest hotels, locations, sightseeing, restaurants...
