Hakone: need a good, classic, authentic Ryokan

I'll be spending a sunday night wtih my wife in Hakone and am looking for a very authentic ryokan with a comfortable room and ideally a private outdoor hot spring.

I'm not looking to spend $300US per person, but something more simple - I just know that the private outdoor hot spring in our room will be best since I'm not sure how we'll like a public bath.

This will be in February, if that helps.

Thank you!

Do a search on this forum for Hakone Ryokan and you'll find some recommendations.

We enjoyed our stay at Kansuiro. If you are not sure how you'll do in a public bath, the rooms have bathrooms with private hot spring baths (non-recycled water).

Enjoy your stay!

Kansuiro's Momiji room price is ¥36,900 per person with two meals. The Momiji room is the lowest level room which has a private outdoor bath. I think you'll have a difficult time finding a ryokan in Hakone with a private outdoor hotspring bath for less than your budget. Give up the idea of private outdoor bath and you should be able to do it.

I don't know what you are expecting when you say a very authentic ryokan. I stayed at Ichinoyu Honkan, and it seemed very authentic to us; it has been a ryokan for hundreds of years and was even painted by Hiroshige. It is not "upper level" in service (you put out your own futons, and dinner and breakfast is served in the dining room, which is alot of fun, we met great people there). We had a nice big room w/separate sitting area and large indoor deep tiled bath, w/a wonderful private rotenburo bath outside our room- and best of all the bath overlooked the roaring river out the back door. Very reasonable rates, within your budget. Close to Hakone-Yumoto, two bus stops from train station.

There are several other Ichnoyu ryokan in Hakone.
