Gulf or Andaman Sea in January?
Hi all,
I'm torn.....
We're going to Thailand from January 6 - 20, 2007. We have the first 2/3 of trip planned (BKK and CM) but are trying to figure out a nice beachy place to end the trip. We will probably have about 4 nights.
I can't seem to find any info on which is better in January: the Gulf of Thailand or the Andaman Sea. We are considering Hua Hin or Phuket area.
Pros of Hua Hin: closer to BKK so we can travel back easily and cheaply for our 6 a.m. flight, not as touristy as Phuket, less expensive.
Pros of Phuket: people always talk about it so it must be good, seems more tropical than Hua Hin area, better nightlife, we want to support the area so devastated by the tsunami.
We are people who like places to be quiet at night, but do enjoy some activity, such as a dance club or two. We'd like warm water and nice sand. We like exploring nature (national parks, etc).
Any thoughts about either place that would help me make up my mind!!!
thanks so much!!!

If you do a search, you'll find lots of comments on both these places. As far as weather, both Hua Hin and Phuket are very nice and dry in January.
One of your assumptions about Hua Hin is off. In both cases, you'll probably need to return to Bangkok the night before your flight. Hua Hin is about 3 hours from the new airport, so you'd have to leave there around midnight to get to the airport on time for an international flight. Even if you fly from Hua Hin, I doubt SGA has a 3 a.m. flight!
There is some great scenery around Hua Hin, but there aren't the wealth of services to get you to them that there are in Phuket.
If you've never been to Phuket, I'd suggest you do that. Take a sea canoe tour of Pang Nga bay.

Hua Hin does have a nice (fine sand)beach but the sea around there is not really good for swimming.
Phuket, and the surrounding islands, does offer clearer blue water with good snorkeling and diving. I would choose Phuket.

Hi you may want to vist Phi Phi Island too if you go to Phuket. There are many day tour providers around, so its easy to go there. Remember the clear pristine beaches and water from the movie The Beach? I love Phi Phi Island...
