Great Book if You're Interested in Burma

Several months ago, Gloria posted a review on a book by Emma Larkin, "Finding George Orwell in Burma". I just finished the book and it was fantastic. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in Burma. Thanks Gloria.

Thanks! I'll check it out.
We recently read: The Piano Tuner.
I enjoyed that too.

Diva,
Is that based on a true story?

Also, The Kite Runner, about Afghanistan, is flawlessly told.....

pete...the jacket states " drawing from
the current political reality in Burma and woven with pure confabulation, Amy Tans picaresque novel poses the question:
How can we discern what is real and what is fiction, in everything we see? how do we know what to believe?

fiction...but reads like a true story told by a dead chinese art collector...

Hmmmm, sounds positively Far Eastern.
I am in the last chapters of The Glass Palace. I appreciate the historical context of the story more then the tale itself, but not bad...

Just finished "Saving Fish from Drowning" and really enjoyed it, and am currently reading "Finding George Orwell..."
Would also highly recomment "The Trouser People" and "The White Umbrella" for Burma fans.

A fascinating true story is: Twilight Over Burma, My Life as a Shan Princess; by Inge Sargent.
Apparantly she now lives in Colorado and an acquaintance was kind enough to have her sign a copy and send it to me.

Hmmmm---with all these book suggestions, this is obviously going to be a Burma year for reading. Perhaps it is time for return visit to that Golden Land. Its been 25 years-----
I wonder if Pagan & Maymo (sp?) have changed much???

our local borders books has none of these burma books so i will be on amazon.com to find these titles...unless anyone has another site for good used/new books...

i bought the amy tan on audio books...
17 hours as i commuted to work each day...sometimes i would park in the garage and have to wait a few minutes for a pause in the story before going inside.

maybe we should start a used book sharing club...any takers???

Sorry Diva,
We get 75% of our books from the library. I rarely put a book up on the bookshelves. Just this morning I finished "Untouchables" by Narendra Jadhav. I was surprised that our local library even had it. (We live 1 hour West of NYC)
It is the true life account of how one family escaped the indignity & "slavery" of the untouchable class. It goes back and details the life of Dr. Ambedkar who actually wrote the Indian constitution and who vied w/ Ghandi for leadership in India. The brilliant Dr. Ambedkar led mass conversions, millions & millions, of Indians from Hinduism to other religions to break the viscious cycle of untouchability. (Naturally the upper classes supported Ghandi because he continued to embrace Hinduism.)
Interesting....
