Google maps offline - Japan?
Hi everyone
I read some useful advice here about downloading Google Maps onto a tablet so you can use the maps when out and about in Japan and not connected to wi-fi. Unfortunately when I tried to do it today, it told me that maps could not be pre-loaded for those areas (Tokyo and Kyoto). Am I doing something wrong or is it impossible?

ClementineLdn - I have been using Google Maps on my Google Nexus tablet - it worked fine in Kyoto and Tokyo most of the time when I am not online. Sometimes when you are away from the central area it will not show much of any detail. Even when on the train the little blue dot which was me would follow along. ;-) I guess it is using GPS. I really don't remember how I got it to work.....this link has some info:

I just tried the new "save for offline feature" on my iPhone and you are right that it says "area unavailable" while it works for where I am now, in Hong Kong.
Anyways, I have been using the cheap app "MapsWithMe" while traveling offline. You may want to consider that.

What I do is to take a screen shot on my phone or ipad of an enlarged map section with route directions and locations. Then you can access it through your photo album. You can also send these selections from your desktop to your device to save as photos.
Another tip is that most hotel rooms still have only wired internet. I took an Airport Express to connect at the ethernet cable to give wi fi access to multiple devices in the room.
A poster in another thread mentioned a TP-LINK TL-WR702N Wireless N150 Travel Router as as a less expensive option.

I have the TP-Link Router mentioned by kalihiwai2 - I set it up at home before I left and when I used it here in Japan I had no problem. So both my laptop and tablet are using my personal wifi from the provided LAN....and it is tiny.....
