Gifu cormorant fishing or Nara?

Gifu cormorant fishing or Nara?
We have one extra day in Nagoya, and are trying to decide whether to venture up to Gifu City for the evening cormorant fishing, or take the day to tour Nara. I've heard the fishing is kind of touristy. Any thoughts? Thanks!

We saw cormorans fishing in Guilin (China), not in Japan. We also made a day trip to Nara.
I think you can not compare these two things. Depend on what you are interested to see. You see cormorans in Gifu, and you will see a lot of deers in Nara. But in Nara you see also beautiful temples.
I would take Nara trip.

I agree. There is no comparison. Nara is one of the best places to visit in Japan. You might also visit Horyu-ji that day.
The cormorant fishing is all tourist show. Considering the size of the Japanese fishing industry I can't believe that anybody is fishing for food using cormorants!
The thing about Gifu is that it is only 25 minutes or so from Nagoya by JR or Meitetsu train. I took a day trip from Nagoya last week to Inuyama to visit the castle, an onsen, and a teahouse. From there I went to Gifu to visit the castle. The castle is small and a reconstruction but has magnificent views. It is not easy to get to even after taking the ropeway.
The cormorant fishing is all tourist show. Considering the size of the Japanese fishing industry I can't believe that anybody is fishing for food using cormorants!

The cormorant fishing doesn't start until about 8pm so you have a full day to do other things before heading there.
The viewing boats are 30,000Y per person.
As the previous poster mentions, Inuyama is nearby. In addition to its castle (one of 4 with National Treasure status), there's a famous tea hut (jo-an) in the grounds of the hotel below the castle. Meijimura (a collection of Meiji-era buildings, including the anachronistic lobby of Frank Lloyd Wright's Imperial hotel) is a short bus ride away.
Gifu is also in easy reach of Hikone (another NT castle) on the shores of Lake Biwa. There's a nice garden with good views below the castle.
Another good day trip from Nagoya is to the Ise Shrines (the catch is you're not allowed to see the shrines). The Atsuta shrine in Nagoya is the same construction (so it is said) and has a similar atmosphere.
However, while these are all interesting places, they don't compare with Nara (especially the outlying temples such as Horyu-ji).
