Gifts from Bali for a couple of kids
My husband and I will be going to Bali for a week next month - staying part of the time in Ubud and part in Amed. I have 2 cousins (10 year-old girl and an 8 year-old boy) who will be having their birthdays right after I get back, so I would like to buy their birthday presents in Bali.
I'd like to have some ideas of what to look for before hand, so I thought I would ask people who have been there before, what kinds of things appealed to your kids? Or if you brought stuff back for kids, what was particularly well-received?
To give an idea of the personalities of these kids, they are both pretty smart, inquisitive kids. The 10 year old girl is interested in jewelry and neat hair clips, headbands, etc. but she is pretty rough-and-tumble outdoorsy too - she mountain bikes, climbs trees, etc. The 8 year-old boy likes dragons, surfing, skateboarding, mountain biking, and that sort of thing.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

For the girl, there are plenty of places to buy fun, interesting but not expensive jewelery. I also remember a lot of fun painted wooden carvings of things like cats with sunglasses.
For the little guy, how about a fun dragon kite? Might have to be creative with wrapping it up to bring home, but the kite would be unlike a typical kite from toys r us.

Great ideas - thanks And for getting things home, I just have to get the gifts back to Singapore - once there, I can ship things home through my company, which makes things a bit easier.

I would second the vote on the kites - all types - bugs, birds, butterflies. There is a place where they make them outside of Ubud that most of the drivers will know - beautiful creations that we brought back for our nieces and nephews. You may prefer to ship them from Singapore but will probably want to bring packing materials to protect them on your flight there.

The dragon kites are a great choice for the little boy or -- there are barong shadow puppets (I'm sure someone will correct me but my impression was this is a good demon in dragon form). The actual barong costume for dances takes two people to wear and is really impressive.
