Getting to Hoi An from Hue
Hi everyone, can someone recommend the best way to get to Hoi An from Hue, please? I understand that you need to go to Da Nang first then on to Hoi An. Is going through a private bus company better or taking the train? Any recommendations for a bus company? I read that the local bus is cheap but I don't think I want to go that option as I've heard it can be quite an uncomfortable ride with the lack of AC and space. I'll be traveling from Hue to Hoi An in a few days (June 24th). Thanks everyone!

Have done it a couple of times by train Hue - da nang and then taxi. The train is cheap, a few $$ the taxi I think around $10-15. It is a great experience and takes about four hours. If you get a clear day, there are some great views of China beach etc.
A normal taxi with stops along the way at the Marble Mountains ( worth it!) and the beach ( not worth it!) will cost $50 -60 .
Finally, if feeling suicidal, you could always take a motorbike taxi for around $25.

What crellston said. Just walk out of the station in Danang and negotiate for a ride. Or, better, see the wonderful museum in Danang before moving on:

We did that train trip the other way round. If you get the train from Hue to Danang then you need to sit on the left-hand side for the views.
If you sit in 3rd Class the windows will be open and there's are plenty of fans. You get the best views through open windows. A single ticket costs 42,000 dong if you book at the train station. Like Crellston suggests, that journey is memorable for the right reasons.
We went from Hue to Hoi An by bus. We were picked up by van from an office in Hue and taken a couple of miles to a side road. The bus was a cronk, most of the seats had been broken, ie they were permanently reclined. After about an hour we broke down terminally. Had to unload, and were put on a sleeper bus, which was already as good as full, and had to stand for 4 hours. I suspect that this was all premeditated, and happens regularly.
Personally, I wouldn't make a special effort to go the Cham Sculpture Museum.

LL has this thing about third class. Sure it can be interesting for an hour or so, but it will be crowded, the seats will be hard and there will be no AC.
The Cham Museum is definitely worth a detour.

You have to pre-purchase tickets even for 3rd Class. The ticket has allocated seating.
The train we got was busy, but wasn't packed. It'd be packed if it was a holiday like TET, or when universities are starting and finishing, or at any other time that locals move around in great numbers.
The windows in 2nd Class and above are fixed, and will probably be dirty. You can go to the end of the carriage and stand between the carriages, but you'd be sharing the space with smokers. Hence the reason for travelling 3rd Class with open windows to get the best photos.
I thought the Cham Sculpture Museum was a disappointment compared to other museums we visited in Vietnam, but the only way to find out is to go I suppose.

I agree with chantungsinz. Actually, there are many buses to go to Hoi An from Hue and the price is quite cheap. However, buses will go through a long tunnel, you may miss some beautiful views. Therefore, I think you should go by train; in addition, as I know, going by train is not so expensive.

bumping this thread... hopefully crellston or someone else with experience can chime in.
My wife and I will be traveling from Hoi An to Hue in the beginning of July. I would like to do it by taxi so that we can tailor our trip with stops for photo ops on the Hai Van pass, and others in the Marble mtns.
Can I have my hotel in Hoi An call a local taxi company and arrange the trip, and have the taxi pick us up at the hotel (with our luggage)?
About a year and a half ago, my wife and I created a custom "tour" around the area a few hours out of Saigon - we had our hotel contact the Mai Linh taxi company and contracted to have a driver pick us up in the morning, and then drive us around to our itinerary which consisted of the Cu Chi tunnels, a specific restaurant I wanted to go to for lunch in Trang Bang, and then the Cao Dai temple, returning us back to the hotel in the late afternoon. The taxi company estimated it would be about 9 hours, and 250km, and charged us the equivalent of around $80-90 USD (paid in VND to the driver at the end of the trip).
Can we do the same thing in Hoi An, but rather than returning us to our hotel there, take us to our hotel in Hue?
Thanks!

Kathie and Thursdaysd are spot on. Travel agents, hotels or taxis will all provide this tour for you. We did it in 2015 by arranging with a agencies we found on the street who charged us $50. The trip takes 4 -5 hours depending upon how long you spend at each place. The usual stops are;
- the Marble Mountains and temples (excellent, but crowded - go early if poss),
- a cafe near the top of the pass near a bullet- ridden gun emplacement - great views if clear
- a beachside fish restaurant for lunch - one look at the raw prawns gently sunbathing in 100 degrees plus prompted us to quickly move on!
- another "optional" stop is a marble factory, but unless you want an 18 foot Bhudda for your garden, perhaps not a great use of your time.
Another alternative is to get a car or taxi to stop off at the Marble Mountain and then get the car to drop you at Da Nang train station for the train to Hue. One of Asias great train journeys - takes about three hours. You will need to book tickets in advance. We arrived in Hoi An yesterday day and got a car from the station at Da Nang which cost 350k Dong.
Be prepared it is VERY hot here now!
