I should mention that we have the option of leaving my 2 yr old daughter with my in-laws and go out for activities and to night spots / restaurants.

touring in and around ubud... the many different towns and sections each have their own area of interest: painting, masks, silversmiths, wood carvers, etc..

the so called eat bali and the west coast are vastly different.

back roads are very interesting too.

it helps to have a driver to explore... we like to use putu..

W is quite close to a number of restaurants, clubs, shops and spas so you'll have lots of choices.

Within walking distance along the beach: La Lucciola (my favorite), Mosaic, Potato Head. A bit further KuDeTa. These are all in the sophisticated but higher price range. Most offer breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks.

Other nearby restaurants Metis, Sarong, Sardine, Mama San, Hu'u. Hu'u is good for after dinner too. Metis especially for Friday evening cocktails.

For the less expensive range: I like the very humble (i.e. cheap) Warung Batu Belig. Right on the beach, good for a beer and Indonesian food. A few minutes by taxi: Taco Casa, Cocoloco, for TexMex, Pizza/Pasta respectively. Not fancy, but a good value.

Take a long walk along the beach. You can walk South all the way to Kuta if you're so inclined, though it's best at low tide. There are many lively beachside restaurants or you can rent a chair and umbrella and take a swim. There are no lifeguards at W, but if you head south you'll find swimmable beaches. (Still bigwaves, though.)

The last week of March is a major holiday period in Bali so you'll also see beach ceremonies, especially around Petitenget Temple.

Is a visit to Petitenget Temple a must do? Coming from India, visiting temples was not on my agenda. But it would be nice to see some performance, especially the balinese take on ramayana and some of the other mythologies that we share.

No I wouldn't consider a visit to Petitenget a priority. What I was referring to is the beach area adjacent to Petitenget temple where ceremonies are often performed. This is just a few hundred meters from the W.

The best performance venues are in Ubud. The concierge will have a performance schedule. Ubud Palace is recommended, but the village performances are also good. They usually begin around 7:00 or 7:30 so you could have an early or late dinner in Ubud.

Because of the holiday period, there will be lots of special performances, ceremonies and processions all over Bali. Again,your guide or concierge could direct you. (Or you may just stumble upon an event while walking or driving by.)

Yes, you could dine at a different restaurant in Bali every night for a year! Easter week is a busy time in Bali, so ask the W concierge to make reservations for you.

I don't have any suggestions for Batur guides. Your resort will be able to arrange something for you.
