Four Seasons or Shangri-La in Bangkok
Hi - Can get really good rates for a 3 night stay in either the Bangkok Four Seasons or Shangri-La. Which would you suggest? Any opinions/concerns/issues/compliments are appreciated. Thanks!!

The Four Seasons has been recently refurbished and is lovely. The Shangri-la is nice enough and is located on the river, my location of choice. Lower level rooms are not as large as the FS, and I've heard reports that they are not as nice as their higher level rooms. The Krungthep Wing is reported to be the nicer of the two sections of the hotel.
Another big difference would be the size of the hotel...the Sha-la has many more rooms. Four Seasons service is reported to be tops. Four Seasons has construction going on right now next to it, so the pool may be noisy from that. Sha-la's pool may be crowded.
At any rate, be sure you are comparing like to like. Check room size and inclusions in the rate. Depending on when you are going, you may be able to get a suite at the Sha-la with breakfast, transfers and late check out for under $200.00. Check their website for special offers for your dates.

both are near the skytrain stops....4S is more central but lacks the appeal of the river and its cleaner air...
sh-la has a nicer pool....4S has nicer restaurants, but sh-la has great rest. too
its a toss up....sh-la is very spread out internally between the two wings which puts some people off, but the main building is not bad...
breakfast at sh-la is fantastci...have never had 4S's break....

If you plan to do much shopping in Bangkok, the Four Seasons is in a much better location for schlepping your packages back to your room. It's right across the street from a major shopping area. A river location means taxi/skytrain to get back to your "home base."

Four Seasons.I stayed there as the old Regent and it was superb .Big rooms and lovely service and the afternoon tea in the lobby with a string quartet in the minstrels gallery is realy great .My old impression was that you could ' smell the $ ' as you entered but not in a nasty or intimidating way . Older and understated . Hope it still is .

You'll absolutely love the Four Seasons.You won't want to leave. I still drop by there to eat and say hello to the staff.They still remember me and many think that I'm still staying there.
Although it's a 5-star hotel, it's not stuffy at all. It's very laid back. And the Rajadamri skytrain station is just across the street. Have a great stay. Happy Travels!
