Flying to Bali from New York

I am trying to plan a honeymoon in Bali and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for flights out of New York City. The best idea I came up with was flying Japan Airlines from New York to Tokyo and then on to Bali. The cheapest flights I found were around $1400 roundtrip and the trip took around 26 hours. Are there any better/cheaper options out there?

Fly Singapore Air - they have a non-stop from JFK to Singapore (although I believe they just made it all business class). The flight from Singapore to Bali is pretty quick.

Frankly, the flight you found is likely to be the cheapest these days, as prices seem to go up daily with the cost of jet fuel.

Yes, $1400 sounds pretty good and JAL is a good airline. It took us 43 hours to get to Bali via Bangkok (and Chicago and Tokyo) with a short overnight stay at BKK. I'd lock it in based on rising fuel costs.

Look at Eva Air via Taipei. Their Deluxe Class is often the same as other airlines' economy.

When is your honeymoon? That time of year will affect the ticket price.

For summer travel, Singapore Air's non stop biziness class flight from Newark to SIN is now pricing at $8,000 and change. Yikes.

Some of the cheaper alternatives, along with the JAL flight you mention, is with Cathay, which has had some good fares. The flights are all through HKG. Also, Virgin Atlantic, through London, seems to have had some good fares, connecting in SIN to Bali. In addition, depending on the day you travel, Malaysia Air, out of Newark has had good prices and the airline gets good reviews.

On the JAL flight you priced, is that on American metal from JFK, connecting to a JAL flight in Narita? It seems those flts are way cheaper than JAL all the way through.
Have fun and Congrats on the future wedding.

Cathay Pacific had been offering good round-trips to Bali from JFK until June 1, but I believe that sale is over now, but I'd still check the fares. There's no way to get the trip down below 24 hours, though.

The nonstop on Thai Airways is being discontinued, and the Singapore Airlines flight from EWR is going all-business class, but you can still go via Frankfurt, I believe.

I htink it might still be possible to find a flight for $1200, but that's about as cheap as it's going to get for this summer/fall.

Another option would be to buy a Cathay All-Asia pass and spend a week in Bali and some time somewhere else. The base price is $1099, and if you add just one more destination, you might top out about $1,400 which will be a good value, in my opinion.

Thank you for all the quick responses. I'm actually getting married next July, so obviously by the time the honeymoon rolls there will in all likelihood be a big shift in prices. I'm a young attorney and I don't get all that much time off, so I am really looking forward to this trip. I'm hoping I can book everything by October/November so I can lock in the cheapest prices for airfare.

ugluk : I said you would get plenty of replies!

Do read the GPANDA's and RHK Asia trip reports I and II here as included masses of information about Bali for you including those budget Air Asia flights, I am sure you will get more tips for the flights.

ugluk, I think you've been given some good advice. You can go either way from New York to Bali -- east or west -- and it's about the same.

I prefer SQ and would agree that the non-stop from Newark to Singapore connecting to Singapore is the most painless (except that you need to spend the night in Singapore on the return).

If the business fare puts the SQ non-stop out of your ballpark then the next best choices would be:

1. Cathay, through Hong Kong
2. Japan Airlines, through Tokyo
3. Eva, through Taipei

There are lots of other choices, but the key is to only stop once enroute. Or on the other hand, you may choose to incorporate the stopover as part of your itinerary.

Bali is a perfect place for a honeymoon. July is a great time of year to go there.

If I were you, I would just book the $1400 flight after a little more research. You don't want to miss out because you are searching for the perfect flight.

A great hotel in Ubud is the Alam Shanti. We just stayed there and it was superb. Go to AlamShanti.com. Make reservations as soon as possible. It fills up quickly.

Also, Putu is a great guide. He's knowledgeable and charming. Balifriend.com.
