How much time should we allow between flights? Our flight to Shanghai Pudong from Chicago is booked on American Airlines. Upon arrival, we want to fly directly to Beijing. How much time should we allow? We will need to go through customs/immigration and collect our bags. Is 2 hours and 20 minutes enough time to make an Air China flight?

Why are you not flying firectly to Beijing? While AA doesn't fly to Beijing a partner does.
If it's an air miles thing you can use them to but the Beijing ticket but not to upgrade from coach where it must be AA and not a partner.
Or so the current rules appear to state.
Will you have your Shanghai to Beijing tickets in hand? Will you need to change airports? Those are the big questions.
If you don't have to change airports and you have your tickets, your luggage should be able to be checked through from Chicago to Beijing. Just show the agent your tickets and make sure the luggage has the right tags. In that case 2 hours should be plenty.
We don't want to change airports. I'm planning to book the Shanghai-Beijing flight through Ctrip before we go. Right now, it's either a layover of 2:20 or 6:25, so that's why I'm hoping 2:20 is enough time (another 4 hours in an airport is not appealing after a long-haul flight). Will check with AA to see if they'll check our bags through to Beijing, even though the Shanghai-Beijing leg is not their airline/partner (unless someone happens to know?).
