US tour companies are only starting to offer trips to Burma this year. My advice would be not to go on a group tour, but it's too late for that advice.
There are now many trip reports about Burma here. Go to the top of the page and choose view by country and it will bring up all recent posts about Burma.
Do you have a copy of the Lonely Planet Guide? If not, get one now and study up. There is much about Burma that is very different from other countries. Note that even though the guide was published in De prices have skyrocketed since publication.
Be aware that you cannot use credit cards in Burma. You need to carry in all of your cash in perfect, clean crisp US currency. Take US$100 bill to exchange for kyat - at the official bank exchanges in the airports or at the bank exchanges in downtown Yangon. You will need smaller bills to pay for admission fees, incidentals at hotels, etc. Please do not pay vendors in US dollars, as they are hassled when they try to exchange for kyat. It is still illegal for most people to possess foreign currency. The LP suggests you exchange currency on the black market, but that was before the bank exchanges opened.
Try to find some time to wander on your own. Being in a tour group drastically cuts down on your individual interactions with the people.
Be aware that you must take off your shoes before entering religious sites - even those that are ruins. We always wear flip-flops - easy to slide on and off.
Have a wonderful trip!
I just returned from a visit there. Read my trip report and if you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them as best I can.
