Our Asia itinerary/hotel choice looks like this so far:
Hong Kong - 6 nights at YMCA Salisbury
Siem Reap - 5 nights at Angkor Holiday Hotel
Bangkok - 5 nights at Arun Residence
Luang Prabang - 4 nights at The Apsara
We have two nights in Singapore after Luang Prabang and I'm just now figuring out hotels there - I had several suggestions that I just checked out on trip advisor and the comments weren't great, or the hotel was too expensive.
I *think* we would like to be in Chinatown - we're not shoppers so Orchard Rd isn't our cup of tea (I think?) - anyway - here's the hotels I looked at - any comments would be appreciated:
- Royal Peacock
- The Scarlet
- Hotel 1928
- New Majestic
We prefer smaller hotels but maybe this is the time to do a big hotel - our budget is around (don't laugh) $100USD/night.
Thanks for any suggestions/comments.
Finally turning my attention to 2 nights in Singapore - hotel comments appreciated!

Hi Elizabeth,
The four hotels you mentioned here are boutique hotels, and they are located in the historic conservation area known as Tanjong Pagar, bordering Chinatown. It's an area full of historic charm, and you are within walking distance to many, many excellent restaurants and well as local eateries.
However, part of that charm also harks back to one of SIngapore's red light district before the area was gazetted conservation. You would find some red lightbulbs above doorways, discreetly of course. Nevertheless, the area is very very safe. I'd say as safe as Orchard Road or the central business district, even in the evenings.
The 4 hotels all have Starck furniture or the likes of, however, please note that room sizes are very very small. I'd check with reception the dimensions of the room if you think space would be an issue. If it's not a concern, then this can be a lovely area to spend 2 nights.
For USD$100 and below, you may wish to consider another boutique hotel - Albert Court. Located in the Bugis Junction vicinity, it's decorated in a Peranakan style. The URL is http://www.albertcourt.com.sg
