family vacation Bali Jan 2011
Hi
I always appreciate the input from Fodorites.
Our holiday 1 day Jakarta due to late night flight and 9 nights Bali.
We would like to spend most of our time relaxing(beaches/spas etc) but would enjoy a few days absorbing the culture as well.
tips regarding hotels and things to do would be appreciated.
My daughters are 19 and 8 years old.
Thanks
Anom

Consider whether you want to spend your time at one hotel or spend part of your time at a beach location and part at an inland location near Ubud.
My two warnings about where to stay are
1. avoid Nusa Dua which is a sterile tourist complex
2. avoid Kuta which is a party beach.
Sanur is my favorite beach area, but there are other nice areas as well.
Read some of the trip reports here - there are many!

take a look at the pan pacific hotel....rates are reasonable and the place is very lovely and not far from loads of activities.....it is perched above the ocean and has fabulous pools...
i also love sanur....tanjund (sp) sari is a lovely place and the family units near to the beach are fantastic...

With kids, I'd certainly consider the Bali Hyatt at Sanur (not the Grand Hyatt - it's at Nusa Dua). The Bali Hyatt has fabulous, award-winning gardens, beautiful pools (very Balinese) and is right on the beach. I believe the Pan Pacific is so high above the beach that the beach isn't readily accessible (correct me if I'm wrong, Bob).

Tandjung Sari has a nice paired unit 26A and 26B that we were able to rent in Nov. The rooms are connected but have separate entrances and verandas and the room price included a hearty breakfast.
They are directly across from the lobby so fairly close to the beach. The "Family" unit which is even closer is currently undergoing renovation.

Not sure If I'm too late for your trip but my favorite places for families in Bali are Ubud, Jimbaran and Sanur.
Regardless of where you are it's incredibly easy to leave the tourist scene behind and get out into the island to see some fantastic sites.
And the Balinese people are so friendly your kids will love it. Have fun.

Hi
Our family of 4 holidayed In Nusa Dua in early January 2011.
Having read the comments on the site regarding Nusa Dua as sterile/touristy, my family and I were pleasantly surprised by the area. There are lots of restaurants(serving many cuisines),small convenience stores and small boutiques.
The shopping centre is The Bali Collection(mix of upmarket shops, restaurants, banks etc. A shuttle bus runs at scheduled times during the day - pick ups and drop offs from The Bali Collection to the Nusa Dua hotels.
The Nusa Dua beach is fine - my family enjoyed it.
Day trips are a must - most definitely to Ubud(the wealth of arts and crafts are so unique and beautiful)- spend more time here if you can.
We did the usual excursions but it was wonderful as this was our first trip to Bali ie.Tanah Lot, Ulun Danu,Bratan twin lakes, Kintamani tour, Coffee Luwak and spice plantations etc.
I was not brave enough to sample coffee luwak(civet cat coffee but enjoyed the outing nonetheless.
Bali has so much to offer - not just the beaches.
Driving through and viewing the Balinese way of life was so insightful. We did not tire of seeing the Balinese women place beautiful offerings of intricately woven fruit, leaves and flowers at their shrines.
The beautiful rice plantations were so lush and green - we spend time time watching the farmers at work as there is so little mechanisation.
Balinese families praying and bathing at the Spring Temple are images indelibly imprinted on our minds - unforgettable. I could go on but this is beginning to look like a trip report and maybe it is.
The traffic jams were horrendous but our driver /guide was good natured at all times- very tolerant and patient.
We love to visit Bali again - absolutely unforgettable.
Bali is wonderful
