Could anyone who has been to China please tell me what kind of face mask is the best to purchase before my trip in late April, a 3M Hepa mask or a Respro type that cyclists wear?

i don't think you need one
Pollution in Beijing has been horrible. There have been anecdotal and government reports stating this. We brought a NIOSH approved N95 grade face mask when we visited China, and I recommended this type of face mask to a relative who will be visiting China in April. If you are lucky, you won't need to use it. But if pollution is bad, you will be glad to have a good face mask available.
