We have an overnight in BKK and want to stay at a lux hotel but does it take quite a bit more time to get to the Pen than one of the Sukhumvit area hotels? From my guidebook, it says that it is a few more miles away from the airport but with traffic problems, etc. , is the drive time about the same? Thanks.

Same amount of time or only a little different, longer or shorter. If traffic is bad over the bridge, they can drop you at the Pen reception on the Oriental side of the river and boat you over...your luggage will be taken care of so no worries there. I would stay where you want and not worry about the time as it's not significantly different.
Really depends on what time you go. We got there in 25 minutes from the Penn but it was 10 at night. During morning or evening rush hour you need more time. I wouldn't base my decision on where to stay on this.
We're arriving at midnight so no worries then but leaving mid-day-thanks for the replies.
I would recommend using KimJapan's plan in reverse for the way back to the airport from the Pen - Take boat and leave from Oriental side. It took us 90 minutes from the airport to the Pen at noon.
