Dress code at Raffles hotel?

We are stopping in Singapore on our way to New Zealand in December and my husband would like to go to the Raffles hotel for a Singapore sling. Will we have to be smartly dressed to go there? (would we be allowed wearing shorts and sandals?) and are children (our son is 8) allowed?
Thank you.

For sure, you cannot go into lobby area with short and t-shirt. I was denied to enter the lobby area last time.

You may or may not get stopped going through the front lobby. Lots of guests wear shorts, so it will depend upon how "smart" you look overall. I doubt that a family will get stopped, but a backpacker-tuype might be.

If you are stopped at any point, I would politely explain that you are looking for the Long Bar, most likely they will take you there or point you in the direction, as they don't want to discourage people who want to spend money in the hotel.

The bar which serves Singapore Slings in the Long Bar, which is upstairs on the second floor. There is a back entrance into the bar area from the shopping arcade. You can certainly go in that way. I don't know if children will be admitted to the bar, never tried to take one in...However, it will definately be full of tourists and not just guests. Dress is casual in the bar.

The Long Bar (Like the rest of the hotel) was completely renovated a decade or so ago and to me has a very sterile feeling. Many areas of the hotel are off limits unless you are a guest and the hotel feels devoid of life as a result. That said, I still found it enjoyable to relax with a Singapore Sling and pretend I was Somerset Maugham or Joseph Conrad. Have a good time!

MM: just got back from 2 wks in singapore, and did basically 3 things...eat, eat, and you guessed it, eat. went to the long bar for a modified sling(made with vodka vs gin), a tiger draft, half dozen beef satays, and a virgin daq. for my wife. i was dressed in a rl polo shirt, timberlake shorts, and rocksport shoes, and was warmly welcomed. you can access the long bar off the main street, so no need to go into the lobby.i was denied entry into the lobby as men in shorts are not allowed into the lobby area, while women in shorts are gleefully welcomed. still, singapore is a clean, orderly, and safe city, with lots of good food. rec. you start your firt day with a simple breakfast of roti prata(indian bread with a small bowl of curry), and end it with the fishhead curry at banana leaf appollo in little india. have a great time.ps. the shells of the free peanuts in the long bar are to be discarded on the floor.
