DPS departure

I am trying to decide which departure time is best to avoid all the problems at the new airport, if that is even possible. I can fly out DPS to REP at 7:30pm or 4:10am in February. Which departure time would you recommend that would be quickest, if any? How much time should I allow for an international departure from DPS? Would you recommend paying for the VIP service and if so, does anyone have the information?

Thanks for all the help.

If you leave DPS at 7:30 pm, it would mean you have to overnight before catching your plane to REP. I would consider my overall itinerary in making this decision. While I wouldn't want to have to wake up so early on my last morning in Bali, it might make sense to do so. But it seems you are only looking at the first and last departures of the day.

The only VIP service I know of for DPS is a service that stands in line for you to get your visa. I don't know of any departure VIP service. Personally, I wouldn't pay someone to stand in line for me, but it is up to you.

I'm not aware of any particular issues with departures from the new airport. (Arrivals can still be slow though.) You won't need an agent to get you through check in and immigration.

The major problem remains traffic on the airport road, so if you choose the 7:30 p.m. departure, plan on extra time to get there. At 4:10 a.m. you'll have the road to yourself, but whether that's worth the trouble of getting up in the middle of the night depends, as Kathie says, on your onward connections. Isn't there anything in the middle?

Thanks for the input. There is an afternoon flight but it still requires an overnight in KUL. Also, I will have plenty of time in Bali, but my husband will only have 2 days before we fly to Siem Reap due to business. Wish there were a direct flight to REP!

I ended up taking the evening flight so I can be fresh when I get to REP. Should I plan to get to the airport 2 or 3 hours before the flight? I would like to minimize my time in the airport, but after hearing all the horror stories, the Girl Scout in me says to be prepare. How long would you estimate it will take to get from Ubud to the airport to get there for a 7:15pm?

My understanding is that the VIP service on arrival gets you through immigration faster. I certainly don't need someone to stand in line for me, if that's all the service provides. Cuba also has VIP service. I didn't use it, much to my regret. It took 2 hours to get through immigration, where the VIP people whizzed right through. I certainly don't want to make that mistake again.

Too bad they don't have a departure service, as it sounds like a mess at the airport right now. Can't wait for the trip. Thanks again for the help.

Could you please give me more information about the problems you've heard about at departures? I don't disbelieve it, but I haven't heard it myself.

There are clearly problems at arrivals -- sometimes severe delays -- but my understanding is that departures has been running fairly smoothly.

[Having said that, there was an electricity outage last Sunday which caused hours of delays and snarls. Hopefully, this is a one off case.]

You should check with your resort, as some have a representative at the airport who will help facilitate your check in. This is usually a free service; you're just expected to tip. As far as I know these people cannot enter the immigration departures area.

I would plan to arrive at the airport 1.5 hours before your flight. Getting from Ubud to the airport 2.0 hours. If all goes perfectly smoothly you'll have a 1.5 hour cushion. If you're anxious, add another hour.

I think she is referring to a VIP service for the visa on arrival offered by a private company. Someone stands in line for you to get the visa. I don't think it actually speeds up the visa, it's just that you can go sit in an a/c area while you wait. This is not an Air Asia service.

You are correct Kathie. Not worth it if it doesn't speed up the process. Thanks again.

Marmot: you had wanted to know about the problems. Below is a copy on skytrx (date 1/8/14) and unfortunately there were several more with the same experience. I wanted to fly to Borobudur, but not sure I want to go through this departure chaos 2x.

"We flew into Bali on 26 December. We didn't have any real problems with VOA, Immigration and Baggage collection. No doubt we were the only flight in at that time. On the way out of Bali - 2nd January it was another story. The first security screening was grossly inadequate. The queues were massive and as there appeared to be only 2 x-ray points it took forever. I pity the poor tourists in front of us who waited for approx. 45 minutes in the queue to be told they were in the international departures area not domestic. No signage of course. Once through the first security screening it was another long wait to check in. Purchase of the departure tax was quick but the next queue through immigration was very long and slow. There were more people collecting the departure tax than there were checking at immigration! The fact that we are now forced to walk through an enormous duty free "hall" is annoying. Whilst it appears most airports are doing this it would be nice to bypass them. There are no restaurants, just a couple of cafes with a couple of tables each and a couple of "hot dog stands". There is little seating and plenty of people were sitting on the floor. You can't go to your departure gate to sit down because you don't know which one you are allocated to until it is announced. Once at the departure gate the duty free purchases were wheeled in on a flat bed trolley!!! We had to get on buses to board the plane. The first two buses delivered passengers and then didn't reappear with new passengers for an hour. The airport is not finished, is not staffed sufficiently or correctly and the services are non existent. The whole airport experience was horrific. Next time I go to Bali I will pay someone to express us in and out."

Is there an express service for departures?

Thanks

That account certainly sounds awful, even by Indonesian standards.

I haven't been out of the new airport yet, but many of my friends and family have and none mentioned anything quite so horrific (although they all commented on the lack of seating) so let's hope the issues were holiday crush related. As I mentioned on January 5 the electricity went down causing 4-5 hour delays.

I can't recommend an express service, but suggest you ask your resort.

Or maybe you should rethink the 4:10 a.m. departure. Have a late dinner, leave Ubud around midnight, no traffic, no airport congestion.
