This is our first trip to Singapore but it will be just a 3 day stopover before heading to Sri Lanka. Right now I am trying to determine best area/hotel for public transportation, good dining/bars (more lounge than club), etc. We don't mind walking and I would like this as an option for evening dining. Shopping isn't a high priority although my husband might check out some tailors, planning on doing night zoo safari, and would love to visit Chinatown. Currently looking at a price rate of $225 US or less and considering Pan Pacific Singapore, Park Hotel Clarke Quay, Intercontinental. My first thought was Royal Plaza at the Scotts but that was more attractive due to free internet and stocked mini-bar. Any insights or additional properties to consider? Any friends and family offers to check?
Confused about Singapore mid-range hotels???

Trip Report - 5 1/2 days in Luang Prabang

For me, the most important factor in location is being close to an MRT station. There are restaurants everywhere in Singapore, so any place you stay you can walk to dinner. A number of Fodorites have recently stayed at the Intercontinental and had good things to say about it. Some one here, Bob I think, had a friends and family special rate there.
PS Do check rates at www.agoda.com as they often have good rates in Singapore.
I've been checking Agoda.com and right now the Intercontinental rate is about $65 more than Pan Pacific and both would be non-refundable. We were hoping to find a room with a cancel clause because my husband's work schedule might force us to change plans. If we went with a refundable rate, the Intercontinental is over $260. So that is why either location, location, location is important or we will have to look at the price factor.
I would definitely recommend Royal Plaza on Scotts among your list due to its location and awesome service. Though honestly I prefer the GoodWood Park nearby, see if you can get a good deal through the internet.
You might also want to consider Parkroyal on Beach Road which is extremely good value for money in Singapore.
we loved the intercontinental and its location... there are fab friends and family rates available if you have access....i have a site if you contact me: rhkonthailand@msn.com
2 best sites for me there currently

>>>Confused about Singapore mid-range hotels???<<<
Warm greetings kacollier. The following is not exactly 'mid-range', but will still give a promo to my old main Singapore business travel haunt, the Four Seasons. Worth giving the FS a glance, as various promotions are offered year-round. Great service and wonderful staff and friends.
Even if you don't stay at the FS, consider an evening drink at the property and savour the people watching. Of late, a fun-loving business colleague has been spotted with a most attractive Asian mistress. The occasional delights of Asia business travel -- and please don't tell his long suffering wife back in jolly old England.
Have fun in our joyous part of the world.

... Singapore Girl, You're a Great Way to Fly ...
Great! It sounds like Bob can still get you the special rate at the Intercontinental!
After looking at all these large hotels, I am back to thinking that a boutique is more my style. Any input on the Scarlet, Wangz, New Majestic as to location...dining...metro? Thank you again!!
Dining should not be a consideration because in Singapore there is good food to be had everywhere. The only one you listed that I know is Scarlet. Located in Chinatown, I believe, it's not especially convenient to the MRT, but the deal breaker for me is that some rooms have no windows.
In looking for a hotel for our own upcoming stay, I stumbled across a new hotel (I think it opened within the last week or so). It's the V Lavender and it's apparently located right over or next to the Lavender MRT station. The hotel looks nice on the website and preliminary reports on Tripadvisor are good. They are offering some attractive promotional rates right now (e.g. 120 Singapore dollars, tax included, for a "superior" double).

Look at the tripadvisor reviews carefully. When the Chatrium in Bangkok was ready to open, there were already rave "reviews" on Tripadvisor.
No question, being atop an MRT station is a real advantage.
